BREAKING: Bari Weiss Guts 60 Minutes, Firing Top Producers and Correspondents in Sweeping Purge

A wave of high-profile terminations rocked 60 Minutes on Thursday as CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss moved to clear house at one of American journalism's most storied institutions. Executive producer Tanya Simon, correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi, and correspondent Cecilia Vega were all pushed out, along with several senior production staff members, in what insiders are describing as a sweeping and deliberate restructuring of the program's leadership.

Simon, whose father was the legendary 60 Minutes correspondent Bob Simon, had only taken the executive producer role in July 2025 after her predecessor, Bill Owens, walked out in protest over the network's ongoing legal entanglement with President Trump. Her departure marks a second consecutive EP exit under deeply troubling circumstances.

Alfonsi's ouster had been brewing since Weiss abruptly pulled her report on migrants deported to El Salvador's notorious CECOT mega-prison. Alfonsi did not go quietly. In a scathing internal memo that quickly became public, she called the decision "corporate censorship" driven by politics, not journalism. Days before her formal exit, she warned viewers directly not to be fooled by language about "modernization" and "restructuring." She called it what it was: punishment for refusing to soften factually accurate reporting. Alfonsi has since retained high-powered media attorney Bryan Freedman, who won Megyn Kelly a $69 million settlement from NBC, a signal that this fight is far from over.

What is unfolding at CBS is not a routine changing of the guard. It is a methodical dismantling of the editorial independence that made 60 Minutes one of the most trusted names in American journalism for decades. The journalists being removed are not those who failed. They are the ones who refused to bend.

Be the Change: A Musical Invitation to the Community

The Rogue Valley Peace Choir has inspired audiences to standing ovations this season with powerful messages of peace, social justice, and caretaking the Earth.

Now, it promises singing, dancing, and wildly engaging percussive flourishes during the final concerts of the the choir's 23rd season. With these performances - passionately directed by Rob Griswell-Lowry and skillfully accompanied by Dr. Mikiko Petrucelli - the nearly 100-member choir also invites the community to "be the change we want to see in the world."

The choir will perform at the United Church of Christ, 1801 E. Jackson St., Medford, at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 15. Donations at this concert will benefit the Northwest Seasonal Workers Association. The choir will perform the same repertoire at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, at the First United Methodist Church, 175 N. Main St., Ashland.

Early arrival at both venues is recommended. A suggested donation of $20 is gratefully accepted, but not required.

The concerts' theme comes from the title of the song Be the Change. The song's lyrics revolve around the idea that we can't look outside ourselves for change, but must embody the changes we want to see in the world. The song quotes the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Jr., who said, "Darkness does not drive out the darkness, only light can do that. Hatred does not drive out the hatred, only love can do that."
