May 22 – Epworth Methodist Episcopal Church traces its roots in Marion County to c. 1831 when Pastor A.M. Lorain and his congregation began the task of raising funds to build their first sanctuary. By 1834, a stone chapel (later to become the home of the Houghton Sulky Company) had been erected on East (State) Street near the entrance to the old Marion Cemetery. Other buildings in different locations followed in 1845 and 1854 before the current house of worship at the corner of Center and Vine streets was dedicated in 1891. By 1931, the church roster had grown to more than 2,800 members making it what was believed to be the largest Methodist congregation in Ohio at that time.
