Fr. Mike's Reflections

I have been talking about some of my wedding experiences. One such time the bride and groom asked if they could sing during the ceremony. I had never heard about that but there is no particular reason they cannot. I forgot to ask them to sing for me. So it came time for them to sing. He sang in a country western voice and she sang in opera. Both had good voices but those two singing styles just did not fit well together. Afterwards several folks told me what good voices they had. No one told me they sounded good together. But they did sing.

Cor is a men’s group committed to fraternity, prayer and encountering Jesus together. September’s theme is “Experiencing Holy Moments”. Come join our group on Saturday, September 19th downstairs in the Lazarus Room. We have coffee and rolls at 8:30 am with formal program staring at 9:00 am. Corwin Kronenberg and Mark Royal will be the presenters.

Join us for a weekend filled with food, fun, fellowship, worship, and plenty of reasons to celebrate our parish family.

Schedule:
Saturday, September 12
The fun begins at 5:30 pm with food trucks, games, & live music. We will have our regular 5:00 pm Mass.

Joel Hagberg – Two-Man Band
Joel and his son, Jack, bring guitar, piano, and plenty of your favorite songs from the past several decades. Come ready to sing along!

Food Trucks:
Kenny’s Meatball Wagon - Legendary meatballs and Italian favorites.
La Cocina - Fresh, flavorful Mexican favorites.
What’s the Scoop? - Ice cream, no explanation necessary!
The Lookout - Hearty classics and comfort food from one of our hometown favorites.
Got Rice? - Southeast Asian flavors on the go

Games/Activities:
Minnow Races: 6:15pm & 6:45pm
RC Cars: 6-8pm
Face Painting: 5:30-8:30pm
Ultimate Fruit starts at 7 pm! Find Scott to play!

10:00 am - Outdoor Mass on the grass! Bring a lawn chair and join us for Mass outside!
11:00 am – Parish Picnic - Enjoy lunch together served by the Knights of Columbus.
11:30 am – Dazzling Dave’s Yo-Yo Show: A show the whole family will enjoy!

Please note: There will be no 8:30 am or 10:30 am Mass on Sunday, September 13.

Fr. Mike's Reflections

Recently in my reflections I have been speaking about weddings that I have participated in. There was one wedding where I had spoken with the bride and groom about the flower girl and the ring bearer. The little boy was just 3 years old. He cried and was not able to get through the practice. I asked if the best man was going to keep the rings. No. The little boy was going to do that. I told them he would not be able to make it through the service and it was better for the best man to keep them.

They insisted, so the boy carried the rings on his pillow. When it was time for him to come down the aisle, he screamed and threw the pillow. You could hear the rings come off and roll somewhere. The groom and best man were forced to go look for them. When they got back up to the altar they had grey rings where the knees had touched the floor. They had already played the music for the bride to come in so she was forced to come down with no music. She thought I had ruined her wedding. Not me! She did when she insisted things go just the way she wanted them to go. One of some difficulties that I have encountered at weddings.

CROSS serves hundreds of local families each week, and it takes many helping hands to keep things moving. We’re still looking for more SJTW volunteers to join us!

Volunteers will help wherever they are needed that day, which may include stocking shelves, organizing, cleaning, or other tasks that support CROSS and the families they serve.

Come serve alongside fellow SJTW parishioners, meet new people, and make a difference right here in our community. It’s a simple way to put your faith into action and walk alongside our neighbors.

Are you a working adult, young professional, parent with older kids, or simply someone with a few free hours and a willingness to help? Do you have a truck, a strong back, or enjoy getting things done?

Joe’s List is SJTW’s on-call volunteer team for one-time projects around our parish and community. Some jobs require muscle, others just require a willing heart. You might move furniture, help with a service project, lend a hand to a neighbor, or support one of our outreach partners.

The best part? You volunteer only when you’re available. No weekly commitment or meetings, just meaningful opportunities to put your faith into action.

Fr. Mike's Reflections

Weddings are major events in the lives of the families that are uniting in this sacramental bond. One young woman named Johnson was getting married to a young man named Johnson. They had trouble at the county courthouse getting a license as the person had a hard time comprehending that the name before and the name after the wedding would be the same, but the couple were not related. They told me they had to do a bit of family history to show they were not already cousins. Of course after that they were accused of being from the Appalachian area.

40+ SJTW parishioners showed up to serve, connect, and share Christ’s love with our neighbors at Mobile Hope in Dayton. ...

40+ SJTW parishioners showed up to serve, connect, and share Christ’s love with our neighbors at Mobile Hope in Dayton. What a week it was!

- 7 households received help with projects and improvements they were unable to complete on their own by our work crews
- 70 people enjoyed a delicious Taco Tuesday community meal
hosted by SJTW volunteers
- 10 neighbors gathered for Senior Coffee Hour, providing connection and companionship to residents who are often isolated
- 56 families received groceries through a food distribution with our friends at CROSS Services

But the numbers only tell part of the story. Hope Week was about building relationships, lending a helping hand, sharing a meal, listening to a neighbor, and reminding people that God that loves them!

Thank you for making this week possible! Whether you volunteered, donated, prayed, or supported the mission in any way, you were part of Hope Week.
