There's your prayer language, and then there's the gift. Here's how diverse kinds of tongues, interpretation of tongues, and prophecy work together to deliver one message to the church.
1. The gifts are for the whole body.
"But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal." 1 Corinthians 12:7
Not just for the pastor or the traveling minister. Given to the body, as the Holy Spirit wills.
2. There is your prayer language, and then there is the gift.
Your prayer language is what you do at will, anytime during the day. Diverse kinds of tongues is the gift, operating as the Spirit wills.
"And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." Acts 2:4
3. Interpretation, not translation.
It's interpreting. It's not going word for word. That's why a long tongue can come with a short interpretation.
"If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret." 1 Corinthians 14:27
4. It builds you up.
"I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying." 1 Corinthians 14:5
Edify means to build up. When prophecy comes across, it builds you up. It doesn't pull you down.
5. Two gifts, one message.
A tongue with its interpretation functions the same way as prophecy: edification, exhortation, and comfort.
"Let all things be done decently and in order." 1 Corinthians 14:40
6. How to see the gifts flow.
The gifts flow through someone who's filled with the Spirit. The more you pray, the better they flow.
