Excerpts from yesterday's, the 14th Sunday After Pentecost's Sermon-

In last week's gospel, Jesus asked his disciples the question, "Who do you say that I am?". In this week's gospel (Matthew 16:21-28), we ponder the questions, who am I, what does it mean to be me, what is my life worth/what will I trade for my life, what makes a good life?

Jesus asked his disciples, just as he asks us today, to take up our cross and follow him. When we keep that cross at the center of our lives, "that" is a good life!

That cross does 3 things for us-

1- it convicts us of the sins present in every heart.
2- it comforts us by showing us God's love for us in sending his son to die on a cross for our sins.
3- it calls us to a new way of life, to serve Jesus, by serving our neighbors.

Then Jesus told his disciples, "If any wish to come after me, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me". Matthew 16:24

Who do YOU say that Jesus is?

That was a question Pastor Shannon asked yesterday during her sermon. Our Gospel Reading this past Sunday was Matthew 16:13-20.

Pastor Shannon told us that many theologians say if you tell them who you think God is, they will tell you something about who you are.

When Jesus asks the disciples who they think he is, Peter gives the answer, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." Jesus then tells Peter "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church."

Jesus does not rely on Peter's perfection to call on him to be the rock the church will be built on. He knows far too well that Peter has his faults. This should give all of us hope that even though we are flawed, Jesus calls us to be today's church.

We are called, to be sent out into the world, and then to gather again, to renew ourselves in worship.

Today's gospel was about the "Feeding of the Thousands", Matthew 14:13-21. Some of Pastor Shannon's sermon words really stood out-

Jesus depends on the crowds to be lead and fed by us.
Real hunger is constant, but so is God's generosity.
God uses us to make a difference in the world.
