JOHN 3:13–17 THE CROSS: GOD’S LOVE LIFTED UP
Monday, 24th Week - Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross – Year A

Today we celebrate the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. At first, it may seem strange that we would celebrate an instrument of suffering and death. But for us Christians, the cross is no longer simply a symbol of suffering. It is the place where God’s love was lifted up for the whole world to see. Jesus says, “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son.” The cross tells us just how far God is willing to go to love us.
Every one of us carries a cross. Sometimes it is an illness, a disappointment, a broken relationship, a family burden, loneliness, or something we simply cannot change. We naturally want to escape these crosses. And Jesus does not ask us to look for suffering. But when a cross comes into our life, He invites us not to carry it alone. He carries it with us. When we look at the cross, we see that God does not stand far away from our suffering; He enters into it. And because Jesus passed through the cross to the resurrection, our crosses can also become places where faith, courage, and new life are born.
So today, let us ask ourselves: What cross am I carrying right now, and am I carrying it with Jesus? Perhaps instead of asking only, “Lord, take this cross away,” we can also pray, “Lord, stay with me as I carry it.” The cross reminds us that suffering does not have the final word. Love does. Life does. Resurrection does. Let us look to the cross today and remember: we are never alone, because the One who loved us enough to die for us is still walking beside us.

WHAT IS YOUR LIFE BUILT ON?
Luke 6:43–49 - Saturday of the 23rd Week in Ordinary Time, Year A

Jesus gives us two simple images today: a tree and a house. A good tree produces good fruit, and a strong house stands because it has a solid foundation. Then Jesus asks something that should make us stop and think: “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ but do not do what I command?” It is not enough simply to hear Jesus, admire Him, or call ourselves Christians. Our faith must become visible in the way we live.
Every house looks good when the weather is calm. The real test comes when the storm arrives. The same is true in our lives. When everything is going well, it is easy to say, “I trust God.” But when sickness comes, when a relationship falls apart, when we lose someone we love, when finances become difficult, or when we are deeply disappointed, then we discover what our foundation really is. If our life is built only on money, success, other people's approval, or our own strength, the storm can shake us deeply. But when Christ is our foundation, we may bend, we may cry, and we may struggle—but we do not have to collapse.
So today, let us ask ourselves a very honest question: What am I really building my life on? Is Jesus truly the foundation, or is He simply one part of my life? We don't build a strong foundation in one day. We build it through prayer, the Eucharist, Scripture, forgiveness, kindness, honesty, and daily choices to follow Christ. The storms will come; Jesus never promised otherwise. But He does promise to be the Rock on which we can stand. Let us build deeply, build patiently, and build our lives on Him.
