Today is the feast day of St. Teresa of Calcutta, also known as Mother Teresa.

Teresa was born in 1910 and at that age of 18, left home to join the Sisters of Loreto in Ireland. She took the name Teresa after St. Therese of Lisieux and professed her final vows in 1937.

In 1946, she found her “call within a call.” She experienced visions and an interior call to “radiate Jesus’ love on souls” and “be His light” revealing to her his pain for the neglected poor. His love for them became her own.

Her legacy started with the establishment the Missionaries of Charity and the beginnings of her work in Calcutta. She worked with many other religious groups, formed various organizations, and influenced movements. She gained worldwide recognition for her work and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

Mother Teresa died September 5 and was canonized by Pope Franics in 2016. She is the patron of World Youth Day, Missionaries of Charity and a co-patron of the Archdiocese of Calcutta.

Today is the feast of St. Gregory the Great.

St. Gregory the Great is a Doctor of the Church and he was a pope during the Middle Ages.

Originally a Roman prefect, Gregory resigned from his position to become a monk. He was later elected pope.

During this time, famine plagued Europe and he sought to relieve the impoverished by providing them with food from the agriculture of the Church’s various farmlands. Gregory also arranged for priests to daily attend to the poor in the city.

He also had a missionary heart and sent monks to bring the Gospel to England to convert the Anglo-Saxons.

Greogory died in 604 and was titled “the Great” for his servant’s heart. He is the patron of musicians, singers, students, and teachers.

The First Sorrow: Simeon’s Prophecy

Mary’s sorrows begin with a prophecy.

When Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to the Temple, Simeon recognizes Him as the promised Messiah. But his words to Mary contain a warning: “And you yourself a sword will pierce.” (Luke 2:35)

Mary receives this prophecy knowing that the Son she loves is destined to suffer.

She does not turn away.

From the very beginning, Mary says yes, not only to the joy of motherhood, but to the suffering that will come with being the Mother of Christ.

Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us.

Today we celebrate the Passion of John the Baptist. While his life ended in martyrdom, John led a life of faithfulness to God. “He must increase, but I must decrease" (John 3:30)

He is known for preparing the way for the coming of the Messiah. John was a bold preacher and evangelist. He spoke out against the evils of the world and challenged leaders and people in high positions to repent and turn to God.

St. Augustine of Hippo, son of St. Monica, was a bishop and a prolific Catholic writer.

In his early life, Augustine lived recklessly and loved worldly sensualities and partying. His mother prayed for his conversion, and he eventually accepted Christianity as the one, true religion.

After finding conviction through scripture, he was baptized by St. Ambrose in 387 and was ordained a priest in 391. He became the Bishop of Hippo in 396 and spent the rest of his life preaching the Gospel, writing against heresy, and converting people to Christianity. He is recognized as a Doctor of the Church.

St. Augustine is the patron of theologians, brewers, and printers.

St. Augustine, pray for uu!
