Today is the feast of saints Cornelius and Cyprian, working partners in faith in their earthly lives.
⁣
They lived during a time of heavy persecution in the third century. Roman Emperor Decius persecuted Christians forcing them by law to make sacrifices to the Roman gods or be punished. Some Christians did so to save their own lives.
⁣
Cornelius was elected pope after the martyrdom his predecessor Pope Fabian. He favored forgiveness and a reunification with the Church for the Christians who were unfaithful after an act of public penance. Cyprian, who was bishop of Carthage, agreed with the Pope as how to deal with this issue in his own community.
⁣
Cornelius was arrested in 251 AD and later died in 253 AD. Cyprian was also arrested for refusing to renounce the faith and was beheaded.
⁣
Cornelius is the patron of cattle and domestic animals, and Cyprian is the patron of Algeria and North Africa.
⁣
Saints Cornelius and Cyprian, pray for us!
