This week SMCHD awarded Pastor James Bell of God's House of Refuge Lexington Park, MD with our 2026 Public Health Champion Award!

Pastor James Bell is a dedicated leader at God's House of Refuge, a community advocate, and an active member of the SMCHD Group Violence Intervention Team. Established in 2023 by the St. Mary's County Health Department and the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office, this team works to reduce gun violence and improve community safety.

Pastor Bell exemplifies leadership and community engagement by supporting the families of our GVI clients through spiritual guidance, emotional support, and a compassionate listening ear. His dedication to service and passion for the community are reflected in the core values of SMCHD, and his contributions continue to have a positive impact on St. Mary's County.
