Somebody in this room is carrying something heavy this morning, and they are sitting three pews from somebody who could help carry it. That is what God built this church for, so do not slip out the side door today. Find one person, ask how they are actually doing, and stay long enough to hear the answer. The Lord put us in the same town and the same pews on purpose. I love you, church, and I am glad to be worshiping with you this morning.

Most of what holds a church together is never seen.

The doors are unlocked before anyone arrives. Somebody prays for a name nobody else knows. A meal shows up on a hard week and nobody signs it.

God is not keeping a smaller record than we are. He sees every bit of it.

I spent last week in a place built to satisfy people, and the hunger there was enormous. It belonged to people who already had everything the world can give.

I recognized it in myself. I know what it is to reach for something smaller than Christ and call it rest.

He is the only well that has never run dry.

An old man in this week's passage waited most of his life for one morning, and I keep thinking about how ordinary that morning must have looked while it was happening. I have never been good at waiting. Some of you have been at it far longer than I have. Come Sunday and we will read it together.
