Dear Young Life Family,
The past couple of days in our valley have been heavy. Many of you have seen the news — severe winds, flooding, landslides, hazardous roads, and widespread power outages have deeply affected our friends and neighbors from Leavenworth to Peshastin, Cashmere, Plain, and Lake Wenatchee.
Over 11,000 homes lost power Thursday morning. Major passes closed. Floodwaters rose quickly, prompting multiple water rescues at homes surrounded by rushing water. Fallen trees and debris have blocked key roads, and parts of our community remain without access or electricity. While we are grateful that no serious injuries or fatalities have been reported, the damage, fear, and disruption are real. Families were stranded. Travel became unsafe. Schools canceled classes. Our community is tired.
As Young Life leaders, kids, and supporters, moments like this remind us why we exist — to be present. To bring the hope of Jesus in the middle of chaos, fear, and uncertainty. To show up for kids and families not just at club or campaigners, but when life turns upside down.
Here’s what we’re doing and how you can join us:
1. We’re checking in on kids and families.
Many of our teenagers spent the day isolated without power or dealing with flooded roads. Leaders are reaching out, offering rides, warmth, meals, and simply reminding them they’re not alone.
2. We’re coordinating with local partners.
As emergency shelters open and conditions shift, we’re staying connected with schools, churches, and community responders to learn how we can support in practical ways.
3. We’re praying — and inviting you to pray with us.
For families affected by flooding and property damage
For first responders and county crews working long hours
For students facing stress and instability
For safety as road conditions continue changing
For peace in our valley
4. If you’re asking, “How can I help?”
Here are simple ways to support right now:
Check on a neighbor, especially older adults or families with young kids
Offer a warm meal, a generator charge, or a place to shower
Pray specifically for our Upper Valley teenagers who already carry so much
And if you feel led, supporting Young Life’s ongoing work helps us continue showing up for kids when the unexpected happens — not just on the good days, but on the hard ones like this week.
In the middle of all this, I’m reminded of Psalm 46: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Our valley has seen trouble this week — but God has been present. And you, our supporters, help us carry His love into places where it’s needed most.
Thank you for being part of this mission. Thank you for caring about kids, about leaders, and about this beautiful valley we call home.
If you or someone in your circle needs anything — a warm place, a ride, prayer, or support — please reach out.
Standing with you,
TJ Ka’apuni
