On this day in 1928, a little mold led to one of medicine’s biggest breakthroughs.

After returning from vacation, Scottish bacteriologist Alexander Fleming noticed that mold had contaminated one of his culture dishes and that bacteria surrounding the mold had been destroyed.

That unexpected observation led to the discovery of penicillin and helped pave the way for the development of antibiotics, transforming the treatment of bacterial infections and ultimately saving countless lives.
