In this sermon from Mark 5:1–20, we considered the mighty and marvelous mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ displayed in His deliverance of the Gerasene demoniac. Entering a place marked by darkness, death, uncleanness, and demonic oppression, Christ conquered the powers of evil and restored a ruined sinner to Himself, teaching us that no sinner is beyond the reach of the mighty mercy of the Good Shepherd who came to seek and save the lost. This dramatic account not only reveals the absolute authority of Jesus over the kingdom of darkness, but ultimately points us to the greater triumph of the cross, where Christ defeated Satan, sin, death, and hell forever for all who trust in His merciful and mighty name.

2 Samuel 7 stands as one of the highest mountain peaks in all of Scripture. In this chapter, God makes a promise that will shape the expectations of the prophets, fuel the hope of Israel, and find its glorious fulfillment in the Lord Jesus Christ. From David’s royal line would come an everlasting King who would sit upon an everlasting throne and reign over an everlasting kingdom.

In this sermon, we lay the groundwork, set the context, and look back over the biblical storyline leading up to God’s covenant with David. From Adam to Noah, from Abraham to Israel, from the Judges to Saul, through every failed son, every sinful leader, and every dark chapter of redemptive history, one truth becomes unmistakably clear: we are waiting for God’s promised King.

Listen as we begin considering the Davidic Covenant and the King to whom it ultimately points—the Lord Jesus Christ, David’s Son and David’s Lord.

In this sermon, we trace God’s covenant with Israel within the larger storyline of Scripture. We’ll see how the law was given after redemption, how Israel’s covenant life was grounded in grace, and how the law, sacrifices, priesthood, tabernacle, and Sabbath all functioned as God-designed shadows pointing forward to Jesus Christ.

This message also explains why the Mosaic Covenant was temporary and typological, how it functioned as a unified covenant, and why Christians are no longer under it as a law-covenant—yet still read it as God-breathed Scripture fulfilled in Christ.

We move from Sinai to the Savior and see how Christ brings the reality to which the old shadows pointed.
