Shared by Staff: "I was so blessed to have the opportunity to have an interaction with a woman at the thrift store who had a voucher. She was looking for a new pair of non-slip shoes for her new job, and her and I were able to find the perfect pair so she can start her new job." We are grateful to be able to give overnight shelter guests vouchers to shop for free at City Rescue Mission Uplift Thrift. This year, the store has provided thousands of dollars worth of items for our guests.

Mission Manna: Dinner the other night was a well loved Mission favorite, Strata! This is an egg dish that our cooks can make with or without meat. Below is the recipe for the meat version. The Veggie Strata recipe is featured in our September newsletter and will be one of the meal options at our upcoming Annual Appreciation Banquet.

Strata

Family Size: 6 Servings
6 Eggs (whisk in a dash of Lemon Juice)
2 cups Milk
1 lb cooked Meat of choice
1 1/2 cups Shredded Cheddar
6 slices of Bread (cubed)
2 cups diced Vegetables of choice
1 tsp Salt

Mission Size: 270 Servings
32 dozen Eggs (whisk in 1/2 cup Lemon Juice)
8 gallons Milk
32 lbs cooked Meat of choice
12 lbs Shredded Cheddar
15 loaves sliced Bread (cubed)
4 gallons diced Vegetables of choice
1 cup Salt

Directions: Layer Cheddar, Bread cubes, Meat, and Vegetables in the prepared baking dish. Beat together Milk, Eggs, and Salt in a medium bowl. Pour over bread mixture. Preheat oven to 350°. Let casserole sit for at least 15 minutes, while oven is heating. Bake until internal temperature reaches around 190°, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean (50 to 60 minutes.) Let casserole stand for 10 minutes before cutting/serving.

We are so thankful to New Hope Church and some of our faithful chapel volunteers, who advocated for the donation of a keyboard for our chapel services. One of our volunteers even came to help get it set up and connected to our chapel sound system. Music truly is a blessing, as is the compassion of our fellow rescuers. 💙

Thank you for your welcome to "6 in the City"! If you missed it, below is the link to a recent interview that our new executive director, Randy Barton, was able to do with Stephanie at "6 in the City." There has definitely been a lot of change at the Mission in the last year, and we look forward with excitement as we will soon celebrate 115 years of service in Michigan's capital area. We could not do what we do without you. 💙

The other day, I caught up with Will, our food services director, as he delivered a day's food to our single adult shelter. These two carts represent dinner and breakfast at this one location (the entrees arrive separately). Already this year, we have served nearly 130,000 meals. Every day, we are humbled and wait to see if our needs will be met. And every day we witness the compassionate heart of a community and the providence of a God who sees everyone we serve as an individual to be loved. With all the challenges that you, our fellow rescuers, are also facing, we know every gift comes from from the heart. Thank you for showing love with every bite. Thank you for being a rescuer. 💙

Shared by Staff: "Friday night, all the bottom bunks were full and there were 2 guests, who had signed up for a bottom bunk. One of them was over 60, he was not going to be able to climb into a top bunk. After chapel, Terry announced the new bed assignments. 'I want you guys to know, this tears me up to say this, and I’m so sorry. But tonight, some of you signed up for bottom bunks, and I don’t have any to give.' The room was quiet; everyone knew Terry really was disappointed. He really didn’t have any bottoms bunks; they all had been filled. After chapel one of our other guests came to the front desk and said, 'I can go to a top bunk; so, someone else can have the bottom.' And then! 5 minutes later, another guest, came to Terry. 'I can give up the bottom bunk, so someone else can have a bottom bunk.' Terry told the guest thank you, and the guest said, 'The bed has been a blessing to me, now I want it to be a blessing to someone else.' Terry moved the two guests to top bunks, shared the good news, and everyone who wanted one, had a bed Friday night."

Mission Manna 🍽: Dinner the other night was Pork Chops. Of course, we offered our usual sides, including Sweet Corn. Busy night, as we served just under 260 meals (259 to be exact). Note from staff: "Dinner went well, Thanks for all the food! Guest when they saw pork chops said, 'Wow, real pork chops?'…I’m try to figure out what fake pork chops are…" Thank you, fellow rescuers, for the gifts that enable us to provide "real" meals every day to the hundreds of women, children, and men we serve.
