The City Rescue Mission is a member of City Gate Network. This past week, they held their national conference in Grand Rapids. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, to have it so close, so we took a number of staff. This was a great opportunity to network, learn from other missions, and spend time together. Below are some quick captions to highlight the conference.

1. The group in Grand Rapids (yes, that is our food services director on the far right and not a random photo bomber ;)
2. Mark took a photo of the group during a general session.
3. A vendor brought in puppies from the local humane society, which was definitely a plus.
4. Randy, our new executive director, presented a session on no-barrier drop-in centers
5. Randy with Brenten, our new senior director of operations (former shelter director), who both shared viewpoints at the session.
6. Mark was able to catch up with leaders of Michigan missions whom he has known and worked with for some time.
7. Various swag used as a table decoration (the socks went home with our volunteer coordinator).
8. The group closing out the conference.
9. Mark handing Randy "the key" of the Mission, as Mark officially ended his role as executive director after this conference.
10. Our chauffer. He drove to-and-from the conference but also has effectively "driven" the Mission for the last 22 years. Thank you, Mark!

Welcome our new Executive Director! Some of you may have seen the recent video announcement of the promotion of Randy Barton. At our most recent staff meeting, our former executive director, Mark Criss, announced that he has taken a pastoral position as part of the pastoral team at The Commons Church. For the past few years, Mark has been feeling the Lord leading him toward full time church ministry, and, recently, a position became available. The Mission board of directors voted unanimously to appoint Randy as our new executive director, with Mark staying to assist him in learning the role and to work part time as senior director of finance. Randy has served at the Mission for 13 years, most recently as our senior director of operations. In addition to serving as staff at the Mission, Randy has a long history with the Mission, having volunteered here as a child and an adult. We are so grateful to Mark for the 22 years of leadership, and we look forward to this new chapter for the Mission under Randy's leadership. Thank you for your continued prayers, fellow rescuers! We could not do what we do without you. 🩵

The below message was sent out from our executive director, Mark Criss, on June 13, 2018. The two Marks had been working together to see how we could support Mark B and his tireless efforts on behalf of many who were unable to come to shelter due to struggles with mental illness and substance abuse.

Loved Ones,
Mark [Bozzo] was not able to meet at lunch today because he went to glory last night. His wife called me and confirmed what Randy had heard from some guests. Please pray for his wife and daughters and the future of the ministry. Mark had a good heart for the least of the least of these.
Mark Criss

Now, seven years later, we continue to serve the many for whom Mark Bozzo had a heart of compassion. Other missions have stepped forward to start their own drop-in centers, in their own communities. At a recent national conference for missions, our new executive director, Randy Barton, was able to present this work and answer questions on the importance of having a safe place for individuals traditionally excluded from other services. For all those who continue serving without seeming reward, you are making a difference.

Mission Manna 🍽: Stopped by the kitchen last night while a volunteer helped our cooks by prepping for dinner that night. We served Chicken Pot Pie Filling over a Biscuit or Flatbread. Altogether, we had 216 women, children, and men come to the Mission for a meal that evening! A lot of mouths to feed, and our cooks were grateful for the two helpful set of hands at the kitchen and for the generous donations that made up this delicious dinner!

As we head into summer months, we are getting a bit low on meal service volunteers. If you are interested in helping serve at either of our dining room locations, visit us online for the application: https://bearescuer.org/volunteer.html. 🩵

Nothing puts a smile on the face of our donation center manager, Chris, like seeing boxes full of needed items (like personal hygiene items) arrive at our donation center (601 N. Larch). Recently, St. Vincent's Catholic Charities stopped by and made this generous donation, and we are so grateful as we are starting to run low on items due to the great number of needs we are meeting. Currently, our biggest needs are men's deodorant and PJ bottoms (can be shorts, in addition to canned vegetables and cereals. If you are interested in helping, we would be so grateful!

A list with some of these and more can be found on our Amazon Wish List (note: cans and cereal boxes are not on the list as they are often damaged in delivery).

What a joy to welcome visitors from The Bowery Mission (in New York) and Union Gospel Mission (Dallas). They are in Michigan for the Citygate Conference in Grand Rapids this week, and we were glad not only to give them a tour but to hear about the impact they are making in their neighborhoods!
