Every summer evening it happens.

The bug zapper glows in the corner of the porch — warm and humming and strangely beautiful in the darkness. And one by one, moths and beetles and flies circle toward it. Drawn by the light. Unaware of what the light actually is.

Quentin Davis says the image is funny at first. And then it becomes uncomfortable.

Because people do the same thing.

We are creatures made for light — for meaning, for love, for purpose — and when we encounter something that glows, we move toward it. The problem is that not everything that glows is the Light. Success. Approval. Pleasure. Control. These things promise everything light promises — warmth, satisfaction, belonging — and they deliver the same result as the bug zapper.

Not life. Destruction dressed up as attraction.

Romans 6:23 is honest about what the wages of that pursuit actually produce.

But Davis does not stop at the diagnosis. He makes a distinction that changes everything.

Christ also draws people to himself. He is also a light in the darkness that people move toward. But when you get close to this Light — when you finally reach what you have been circling toward — something does happen to you.

Something dies.

Not you. The old you. The self-centered, sin-chasing, lesser-light-pursuing version of you that was never going to find what it was actually looking for. Galatians 2:20 calls it crucifixion. Paul says he has been crucified with Christ and no longer lives.

The difference between the bug zapper and Christ is this. The bug zapper destroys what it attracts. Christ transforms it.

The old life is crucified. And through the same resurrection that emptied the tomb — a new life begins. Forgiven. Free. Alive in a way the lesser lights never produced.

This is what the table is about.

The bread — his body broken — the moment the old self was put to death with him. The cup — his blood poured out — the cost of the new life that came back from the tomb.

You have been drawn to the Light.

Not for destruction. For rebirth.

The old self is crucified. The new self rises.

Come to the table and remember what it cost — and what it gave back.

𝗣𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗺 𝟰𝟲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗽𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗺.

Read it from the beginning before you get to verse 10.

The earth is giving way. The mountains are falling into the sea. The waters are roaring. The nations are in uproar.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗲𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴.

And into all of that — into everything collapsing around people who have every reason to panic — God speaks two words.

𝗕𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹.

Not — wait until it calms down. Not — find a quiet room away from the chaos.

𝗕𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹. 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄. 𝗜𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝘁.

The eye of a hurricane is the calmest place on earth. Not because the storm is gone. Because the stillness exists at the center of it — surrounded by everything violent, untouched by everything violent.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗚𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴.

Not the stillness that comes after the hard season resolves. The stillness available right now — in the center of the season that has not resolved.

Because the point of be still is not that the noise has to stop before God can speak.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 — 𝘀𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗛𝗶𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝗶𝘀𝗲.

He is not waiting for your circumstances to calm down. He is already in the center. Already the refuge and strength and ever-present help in trouble.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹.

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘆𝗲.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝗺𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳.

It was the referees. The schedule. The media. Every postgame interview told the same story — and in that story he was never the problem.

𝗛𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘄𝗮𝘆.

Mike Edmisten has spent decades in ministry and leadership development — and he has watched the same pattern play out in the church.

The language is different in ministry. It is the elders who do not understand, the congregation that resists change, the budget that never allows for it. The excuses sound more reasonable.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲.

Responsibility gets deflected outward. Inner growth grinds to a halt.

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗱𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀.

Nobody was going to advocate for his personal development except him. If he did not own it — nobody would.

Most ministry leaders already know where they need to grow. The knowing is not the problem.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀.

A leader who does not lead themselves well is a danger to everyone in their sphere of influence.

Leadership does not begin with them.

𝗜𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂. 𝗡𝗼𝘄.

The good news — ownership does not mean isolation. Cohorts, coaching, and communities of growing leaders exist because the responsibility is personal but the journey is not solitary.

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗲.
