As this week comes to an end, it may be worth returning to a question from Monday's devotional: do we sometimes confuse being busy with being faithful?

For many of us, stopping is not easy. There is always another message waiting, work that could be finished, someone who needs our attention, or an opportunity that feels too important to miss. When we care deeply about our work and see it as part of our calling, stepping away can even feel irresponsible.

Yet Jesus did.

Mark tells us that, at a time when His ministry was becoming increasingly demanding and people were still looking for Him, Jesus got up early and went away to pray. He did not wait until everything was finished, because there was always more that could be done. He chose to stop while there were still needs around Him.

That is a challenging thought as we look back on the week.

We can work hard, serve others, and do meaningful things while slowly allowing our responsibilities to take the place of the relationship with God that should sustain everything else. Sometimes our difficulty in stopping is not simply about having too much to do. Sometimes it reveals a deeper belief that things will fall apart if we are not constantly present.

But God is still at work when we stop.

Faithfulness is not measured by how available, productive, or busy we are. Sometimes serving God means giving our best. At other times, it means putting something down and trusting that He remains in control.

As you prepare for the days ahead, perhaps take a moment to ask yourself:

Does my routine reflect trust in God or the feeling that everything depends on me?

Perhaps your next step is not to do more.

Perhaps it is simply to trust God enough to stop.

When your work is part of your mission, stopping can feel difficult.

There is always more to do.

A project to finish.
People to serve.
Relationships to build.
Opportunities that may never come again.

And when your profession is connected to your calling, stepping away can sometimes feel like stepping away from the mission itself.

But Jesus stopped.

Even when people were looking for Him.
Even when there were still needs to be met.
Even when there was more work to be done.

He stepped away to pray.

For those of us involved in tentmaking, this is an important reminder:
Our work may be part of our mission, but our relationship with God is where our mission begins.

Sometimes faithfulness means working hard.

And sometimes faithfulness means stopping long enough to remember that the mission does not depend on us.

When was the last time you stopped not because there was nothing left to do, but because you trusted God enough to step away?

**What if being busy isn't the same as being faithful?**

Jesus had important work to do. People needed Him. There was still more to be done.

Yet He stopped.

*“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” Mark 1:35*

Sometimes serving God means giving our best.

Sometimes it means stepping away, becoming still and trusting that the mission doesn't depend on us being constantly busy.

What if the “little” you have today is actually an opportunity to show that you can be trusted with more?

A routine task. A modest responsibility. A job that no one seems to notice.

Jesus challenges us to see these things differently. Faithfulness is not measured by how important something looks but by how faithfully we handle what God has placed in our hands.

As the week comes to an end, take a moment to look back.

Not only at what you accomplished, but also at how you worked.

Did you remain faithful when things were difficult?
Did you keep serving when your effort went unnoticed?
Did you continue to do your work well when circumstances made it tempting to do less?

Joseph remained faithful in the house of Potiphar and in prison, two places he never chose to be.

Jesus washed His disciples’ feet knowing exactly who He was and where He came from. He had every reason to refuse, yet He chose to serve.

Faithfulness is not about waiting for the right circumstances. It is about who we are serving in whatever room we find ourselves.

So, before you close the week, ask yourself:
Did my circumstances determine how I served this week, or did my devotion to God?

Would you still do your best if no one noticed?

Sometimes faithfulness at work looks very ordinary.

Doing the task properly when nobody is checking.

Keeping your integrity when cutting corners would be easier.

Treating people with kindness when you don't feel appreciated.

Giving your best even when someone else gets the credit.

Not every act of faithfulness will be seen by people.

But it is never unseen by God.

What does faithfulness look like when no one notices and when the circumstances aren't fair?

Joseph served faithfully as a slave and later in prison. Jesus chose to serve His disciples by washing their feet, even though He had every right to refuse.

Their examples remind us that faithfulness at work is not about waiting for the right conditions. It is about who we are serving.

What if our devotion to God shaped the way we worked, even when the work was difficult, unnoticed, or unfair?

Called to this city, not the one I wanted.

Have you ever wondered why God has placed you in this workplace, this city, or this season of life?

Jeremiah 29:4–7 gives us a challenging answer. God told His people in exile not simply to endure where they were, but to build, work, flourish, seek the good of their city, and pray for it.

Sometimes our calling is not to the place we would have chosen but to faithfully live for God in the place where He has placed us.

Your workplace is not just somewhere you go. Your city is not just somewhere you live.

What if God has placed you there so that you can bring His peace?

The first person in Scripture described as being filled with the Spirit of God wasn't a prophet, priest or king.

It was Bezalel.

God called him to help build the Tabernacle and filled him with wisdom, understanding, knowledge and skill for the work He had given him (Exodus 31:1–5).

That's a powerful reminder that God doesn't only value what happens on a platform or behind a pulpit.

He also values the engineer solving problems, the teacher shaping young minds, the designer creating with purpose, the entrepreneur serving customers with integrity, the healthcare professional caring for patients and the countless other professionals who honour Him through their daily work.

The Bible doesn't divide work into "sacred" and "secular". It shows that our everyday work can become an act of worship when it is offered to God and used to serve others.

So perhaps the question isn't simply:

"How can I serve God at church?"

But also:

"How can I serve God through the work He has entrusted to me?"

Whatever your profession, your work matters to God.

Does God care about the work I'm actually good at?
