What would be different about my life if the Holy Spirit were merely a doctrine I believed rather than a Person whose presence and power I depended upon?

Francis Chan wrote:

“I don’t want my life to be explainable without the Holy Spirit.”

Neither do I.

The believers we meet in the book of Acts weren't extraordinary people. They were ordinary people whose lives became extraordinary because the Spirit of God was at work in and through them.

Maybe the goal isn't to become more impressive Christians.

Maybe it's to become more dependent ones.

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses…” — Acts 1:8

TRANSFORMATION

“The great miracle of Pentecost isn’t simply that Peter SPOKE differently. Peter LIVED differently. That’s the POWER Jesus promised.”

Fifty days earlier, Peter was afraid to admit to a servant girl that he knew Jesus. At Pentecost, that same Peter stood before Jerusalem and boldly proclaimed Christ.

The Holy Spirit didn't simply change Peter's vocabulary.

He changed Peter.

That's still what we need—not merely spiritual experiences, but lives transformed by the presence and power of God.

“The Spirit empowers ordinary people to participate in the extraordinary mission of Jesus.”

Jesus didn't promise the Holy Spirit so His followers could simply have impressive spiritual experiences. He promised power to be His witnesses.

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses…” — Acts 1:8

God has always done extraordinary things through ordinary people who make themselves available to Him.

You don't have to be extraordinary. You just have to be available.

A story is told about evangelist D.L. Moody. Someone once asked whether Moody thought he had a monopoly on the Holy Spirit. The response was:

“No—but the Holy Spirit has a monopoly on Mr. Moody.”

What a picture of surrender.

The goal of the Christian life isn't to get enough of God to accomplish our plans. It's to increasingly give all of ourselves to Him for His purposes.

That challenged me as I prepared last Sunday's message:

I don't want a monopoly on the Holy Spirit. I want the Holy Spirit to have a monopoly on me.

My thoughts. My words. My plans. My relationships. My time. My gifts. My future.

Holy Spirit, You can have all of me.

“Be filled with the Spirit.” — Ephesians 5:18

Every follower of Jesus has the Holy Spirit John 3:3. But Scripture also tells believers to “be filled with the Spirit.” — Ephesians 5:18

Maybe the prayer isn't simply, “Holy Spirit, give me more of You.” Maybe it's also:

“Holy Spirit, You can have more of me.”

WALK A MILE AT LCC. We've all got excuses for not exercising. But our bodies truly depend upon daily movement to function optimally. The "E" word: EXERCISE is an easy habit to break or never establish. We weren't meant to do life alone. Walk with a buddy. You can walk at your own pace! We remove some of the excuses indoors, climate controlled, free of stray dogs, sidewalk cracks, & potholes. Prayer Walk. Listen to your Bible App. Connect with friends.
