History is more than just a collection of dates in a textbook. It is the very foundation upon which we stand. When Marcus Garvey spoke about a people without knowledge of their past being like a tree without roots, he was giving us a blueprint for survival and growth. Without those roots, a tree cannot find nourishment and it certainly cannot withstand the storms of life.
For the African diaspora, this message was a call to reclaim an identity that had been systematically obscured. Garvey understood that when you know your origin, you gain a sense of belonging that no one can take away from you. Understanding your culture gives you a standard of excellence to live up to and a community to lean on.
Education isn't just about learning how the world works today. It is about uncovering the brilliance, the struggles, and the triumphs of those who came before us. Their stories are the nutrients that feed our current ambitions. When we study our history, we aren't just looking backward. We are anchoring ourselves so that we can reach higher toward the sun. We owe it to ourselves to be deeply rooted in our truth so that our future branches can spread far and wide.
