The festival of Pentecost celebrates the Spirit poured out on the people, the breath of God offering strength, peace, and the power to forgive sins. Christians trust that. the Spirit is present wherever two or more are gathered in Jesus name. The Spirit intercedes on our behalf, stirs in hearts and whole communities, and understands sighs too deep for words. This season we remember that God is still present and working through our human experiences. We pray for the Spirit to guide us in faith, hope, and love. And we ask the Spirit to show us patience and wisdom to live in peace with each other and our neighbors.

“The faith we Christians proclaim needs to be not a clever system but the possibility of dependable relationship. We need to point to the God who does not let go, to the Christ who does not run away. And (here's the rub) we ourselves need to be dependable people... by our faithfulness to the lost, the suffering, and marginal, we begin to show what it is to have faith in the one who doesn't let go.”

Lent is a forty-day journey from Ash Wednesday to Easter. Christians enter into this time of discernment with Noah's family, sheltered by God in the ark for forty days; with the Israelites whom God freed from slavery, who journeyed through the desert for forty years; and with Moses, Elijah, and Jesus, who fasted for forty days in order to prepare for lives of faithfulness...

During Lent Christians journey with those who are preparing for baptism at Easter. With them we all reflect on our responses to the baptismal questions: Do you renounce the forces and powers that defy and rebel against God? Do you believe in God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit?

We renew our promise to live among God's people, to hear God's word and receive the Lord's supper, to proclaim in word and deed the good news, to serve others following Jesus' example, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth. In preparation for this renewal many Christians take up the traditional Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and giving to people in need.

This Sunday, we took time to express our gratitude for the time, effort, and dedication of three outgoing members of the Shepherding Team all while welcoming three new members with the Prayer of St. Francis:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is darkness, light.
Where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.
