Our culture proclaims that God must be the essence of tolerance; He is chummy rather than holy, the man upstairs, rather than the Father who poured out His wrath on His Son.
So long as our bumper stickers declare that “God is my Co-pilot” we can be sure that we don’t know who the God of the Bible is.
When the Lord turns out to be the Holy Sovereign God who will never tolerate sin and desires worship a certain way, many people will seek out a new god.
Everyone is born a sinner but since we are made in God’s image, we are religious. Because of our fallen nature we naturally make a god out of our fallen image.
Only those who are trusting in Christ alone for their salvation are able to serve God in this world and stand assured at the Judgment.

Hebrews 1:1-3 Jesus, the Creator and Sustainer

How much carnal worship is offered up to God today, designed to appeal to the fashions of people but with no reference to biblical principles but often in direct violation of it.
1 Sam. 6:20] God’s people today don’t have the ark of the Covenant, but we can fall into the same Beth-Shemesh mode of thinking.
It is easy to forget that the Lord is Holy, different, and that He does not conform to our expectation of an easy-going God. He takes worship seriously.

1 Sam. 6:19] The Lord struck down 70 people for looking into the Ark. The Lord gives us commands and procedures of worship and how to run His church and we need to obey.
It would be easy to rationalize the death of 70 people as a lingering result of the plague but the Word of God tells us it was a direct intervention of God. [Numbers 4:20]
The Ark was not to be opened or touched or even looked into [2 Sam. 6:6-7]. Isreal needed to realize that the recovery of the Ark was not a transfer of power from Philistia to Israel.
It was rather an expression of God’s sovereignty over both Philistia and Israel, and for that matter, all people of the earth [Matthew 11:25-27].
This example reminds us that we do not show reverence for God by treating Him according to our own wisdom, but only by obeying the commands and precepts of His Word.

1 Sam. 6:17-18] The Philistine religious leaders were attempting to appease the God of Israel with their guilt offerings.
The only offering that will appease God the Father is that of His Son Jesus Christ and unless the Holy Spirit reveals this to a person they will perish in their sins.

1 Sam. 6:13] It was during the wheat harvest that the Ark was retuned to Beth-Shemesh so the people were naturally happy harvesting their field.
Once they saw the Ark they were overwhelmed with supernatural joy. Even the joys in this world does not compare to the supernatural joy a Christian experience but rather enhances them.

1 Sam. 6:12] The cows act against nature [because their new calves are not with them], but under divine compulsion, without turning to the right or left, took the cart to Beth Shemesh
“Lowing” reveals the cow’s emotional state. They were distressed, highlighting the reality that following God’s path isn’t always comfortable.
Because we are born dead in sin we have to be regenerated before we can respond to God. The Lord chooses to reveal Himself to us and grants us faith.
Once we are born again, we still battle the flesh but now we have the Holy Spirit dwelling in us as we work with Him to overcome the flesh- our natural sinful desires.
