Today, I attended a memorial for an Episcopalian who died at the age of 107. He was, when he was a young man, a fighter pilot who served in both the Pacific and European theaters of WWII. He was shot down twice and rescued twice. When he came home, he dedicated himself to his great love, which was music, teaching God knows how many undergrads at WVU. At 107, he asked his priest, my friend Father Michael Delk, "why am I still here?" And Michael's response was, "So we can enjoy you, Leo. So we can learn from you, Leo."

May his memory be eternal.

Heavy rains on July 21 brought significant flooding to communities around the state, especially Lewis, Upshur, and Raleigh Counties. As emergency crews assess the impact, the Diocese will share how we can best support our neighbors in the days ahead.

Holy God, be present now with all those affected by the flooding across our state. Comfort those who have lost homes, possessions, and any sense of safety. Strengthen the hands of first responders and relief workers, and give wisdom to those coordinating the response. Draw us together in generosity and compassion, that no one may walk through this alone. In Christ's name. Amen.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the 1976 General Convention resolution stating that LGBTQ+ people have a full and equal claim to the pastoral care and support of The Episcopal Church. As we celebrate this milestone, we also celebrate and stand in solidarity with our beloved LGBTQ+ siblings, whose lives and whose witness enrich our churches and the Body of Christ.

Archbishop of Canterbury Sarah Mullally is being installed today and the Diocesan Office is watching live and having tea to celebrate.

Join us in praying for Archbishop Sarah and the ministry to which she has been called:

Almighty God, you call your Church in every age to proclaim the gospel of Christ: look with mercy upon your servant Sarah, and grant that, as deacon, she may care for those in need, as priest, sustain us with the ministry of word and sacrament, and as bishop, guard the faith and build up the body of Christ in holiness. Give her wisdom and kindness that as archbishop, she may promote unity, seek truth, and lead us in the way of righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
