Comparing Self-Reliance and True Faith

In the pages of 1 Samuel 13 and 14 in the Old Testament, the lives of King Saul and his son Jonathan stand side by side as a vivid contrast between two ways of living: one driven by self-reliance, the other marked by true faith in God. Saul serves as a solemn warning of where trusting our own strength and methods ultimately leads. Jonathan, by contrast, shows us what it looks like to take God at His Word even when the path is steep and the odds appear impossible. My aim in sharing this is simple—to urge each of us to place our trust in the Lord rather than in our own understanding or abilities.

Six Contrasts Between Saul and Jonathan:

First, self-reliance is fueled by selfish desire, while true faith seeks to honor God. In 1 Samuel 13, Saul blew the ram’s horn to rally the troops to himself. Jonathan, in the very next chapter, attacked the Philistines because he believed nothing could hinder the Lord from saving—whether by many or by few.

Second, the difference shows itself in timing and obedience. Saul refused to wait for Samuel and offered an illegitimate sacrifice. Jonathan, on the other hand, pressed forward to honor God without waiting for ideal circumstances.

Third, sinful self-reliance works hard to please people. Saul offered that sacrifice because his soldiers were scattering. True faith, however, presses on despite physical hardship. Jonathan climbed the steep pass on his hands and feet simply to engage the enemy.

Fourth, self-reliance is preoccupied with protecting personal status. True faith works in partnership. Jonathan did not go alone; he went with his armor bearer—an early picture of the “two by two” principle we later see in the ministry of Jesus.

Fifth, self-reliance often mimics faith with religious appearances. Jonathan, by contrast, gave the Lord the credit before the battle even began. He trusted God for the victory and openly declared it.

Finally, self-reliance ends in failure. Saul lost the kingdom. True faith, however, brings deliverance from the enemy.

The Imperfection of Human Examples:

Jonathan is clearly the better example, yet he was still a sinner. In military terms he went AWOL—he did not inform his father, the king, of his plans. To stand in the pulpit and simply say, “Be like Jonathan,” would be ministerial malpractice.

Every one of us, Jonathan included, needs the grace of Christ. What set Jonathan apart was not personal perfection. It was his confidence in what God had already spoken through the Law of Moses and through the prophet Samuel.

The Call to Salvation and Repentance:

Our ultimate enemies are not Philistines; they are sin and death. Only Christ Jesus has conquered them. Scripture is clear: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). And “if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9-10).

Standing before God and listing what we have done—“I did this, I did that”—will never justify us. Justification comes when we repent, decrease, and allow Christ to increase. There is a dangerous temptation to mimic religion or play at faith. God’s Word is truth, and it is given for our sanctification. Trust it.

A Simple Challenge:

Take a hard look at your own life. Are you operating out of self-reliance or out of genuine faith in Christ? Read and meditate on the promises of salvation in John 3:16 and throughout the book of Romans.

May we be a people who trust the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding.
