Nearly 400,000 communion wafers, known as hosts, are being sent to Paris this week for Pope Leo XIV's outdoor Mass on the Champs-Élysées this Saturday, September 26.

The hosts were made by hand at a Visitation monastery in Lourdes, where three nuns have been producing them for nearly 100 years using just flour and water. Their workday starts at 4 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m., and this month they sped up production to get ready in time, according to French media reports.

The numbers behind the event are hard to picture. The hosts weigh about 276 kilograms, or roughly 608 pounds, combined. More than 3,000 communion stations will be set up along the avenue to serve the crowd, which registration figures put at nearly 600,000 people, making this the first papal state visit to France in almost two decades.
