The word Pentecost is Greek and it means "50th day." Fifty days after Easter Sunday, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and their followers, and the beginning of their Earthly ministry to make disciples of all nations.
Pentecost is also a Jewish holiday, which the Jews use to celebrate the end of Passover. Jews celebrate the gift of the law to Moses at Mt. Sinai on this day. But we, as Catholics celebrate the birth of our Church.
At Pentecost, the Apostles and their followers were gathered in a room. Jews from all over the world were gathered with Peter, the leader of the Apostles and the Eleven. At this time, a great wind blew and a flame appeared as a tongue of fire, which split itself into many individual flames above the heads of all those present. The Holy Spirit came upon these people and each began to speak in tongues. Despite the fact many had no common language, they were perfectly able to understand one another.
Others who were not so blessed, accused those speaking in tongues of being drunk, but Peter arose and addressed the crowd, explaining that it was only 9 o'clock, and that this phenomenon was not intoxication, but rather this was the work of the Holy Spirit, prophesized in the scripture.
Peter then called all those present to be baptized and about three thousand people were baptized that day.

These people were among the first Catholics, and Peter is the first pope of the Catholic Church.

The Holy Spirit does not come empty-handed. He brings gifts that strengthen, enlighten and transform the Christian life. 🕊️

The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are not abstract ideas, but graces that help us become more docile to God’s will and more faithful witnesses of the Gospel.

The 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit:

1️⃣ Wisdom
Helps us see life through God’s eyes and value what leads us to Him.

2️⃣ Understanding
Helps us grasp the truths of the faith more deeply and allow God’s Word to enter our hearts.

3️⃣ Counsel
Guides us in our choices and helps us distinguish good from evil, especially in difficult moments.

4️⃣ Fortitude
Gives us courage, perseverance and strength to remain faithful in trials.

5️⃣ Knowledge
Helps us recognize God’s presence in creation, in our lives and in His plan for us.

6️⃣ Piety
Opens our hearts to love God as Father and to live with charity toward others.

7️⃣ Fear of the Lord
Is not terror, but reverence, trust and the desire not to turn away from God.

When we open our hearts to these gifts, the Holy Spirit renews us from within and helps us live as true disciples of Christ.

Come, Holy Spirit.
Fill our hearts and guide us on the path to Heaven. 🙏

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. At first glance, it might seem like a feast of departure. Jesus leaves the earth. The disciples are left staring into the sky. But the rich theology of the Church invites us to look much deeper into this mystery. ☁️

Christ did not abandon us to return to a distant realm. Instead, He did something entirely unprecedented. He took our human nature into the very heart of the Holy Trinity. Heaven is no longer just a spiritual dimension. Because of the Ascension, heaven now forever contains human flesh, human bones, and a human heart. 🤍

Even more profoundly, He ascended with His wounds. The glorified scars of the crucifixion are eternally present before the Father. This means your human struggles, your tears, and your bodily reality are known and embraced in the highest heavens. Human nature has been elevated beyond the angels to the very throne of God.

Saint Augustine beautifully taught that Jesus did not leave heaven when He came down to us, nor did He leave us when He went up to heaven. His physical departure made way for a universal presence. He is no longer confined to walking the dusty roads of first-century Judea. Because He has ascended to the Father, He is intimately close to every single one of us across all time and space, most perfectly in the Holy Eucharist. 🍞✨

The Ascension is not a farewell. It is a profound beginning. We are not left as orphans waiting for a distant king. We are living members of His own mystical body. Where the Head has gone, the body is destined to follow. Our ultimate homeland is secured. Let us keep our hearts anchored in heaven so we can bring the light of eternity into the world around us. 🕊️🙏
