First African Methodist Episcopal Church (FAME) seeks to glorify God, making disciples of Jesus Christ, developing courageous leaders, and organizing our community for justice, healing, ending food insecurity and spiritual isolation. This year, God is challenging the First Church and our ministry partners to STRETCH in 3 ways:

Women’s Day Sunday Worship Celebration!

Our big celebration will be Sunday, September 20, 2026, for our Women’s Day Worship Service.

Our theme is:
“Women of Faith: Chosen by God, Equipped by His Word, and Empowered by His Glory.”

Our scripture is 1 Peter 2:9 (NLT):

“But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for He called you out of the darkness into His wonderful light.”

We are excited to welcome Reverend Dr. Karla J. Cooper, Presiding Elder of the Midwest South District, as our guest speaker. If you have never heard Dr. Cooper speak, you are in for a treat!

This isn’t just your ordinary wing dinner—we’re taking it up a notch! Guests can grab their meals to go or dine in and enjoy a jazzy Café FAME experience with light jazz by DJ Mari, specialty mocktails by Mixologist Mike Sanders, and, of course, plenty of good food, laughter, and fellowship.

We’re going for a fun 1920s–30s jazz club vibe in Café FAME, so come ready to work, fellowship, and have a good time!

Our $20 dinner includes three wings—fried, smoked, or lemon pepper—along with potato salad, green beans, a roll, dessert, and a drink.

FAITH IN ACTION: LEARNING TO ORGANIZE FOR CHANGE!

This past Saturday, First AME Church of Kansas City, KS became a place of learning, dialogue, reflection, and possibility as community members gathered for an Introductory Community Organizing Training through the Faith in Action organizing pilot project.

The focus was powerful: The Power of Self-Interest.

We explored what it means to identify the things that matter to us—not simply as individuals, but as people of faith and members of a community—and how those interests can become the foundation for building relationships, developing leaders, and creating collective action.

And this wasn’t simply a training where people sat and listened.

There were conversations around tables.
There were questions.
There were stories.
There were moments of reflection.
There was laughter.
There was challenge.
And there was a growing realization that our voices, our relationships, and our lived experiences have power.

Led by Rev. Deth Im, Director of Faith Leadership, the training gave participants practical tools and a framework for understanding how effective community organizing can help congregations move beyond simply identifying problems to building the relationships and collective power necessary to address them.

This is what happens when the Church gets serious about being present and not just inside the sanctuary, but in the community. Four churches were represented at this session.

We are learning that ministry is not only about what happens on Sunday morning.

It is about knowing our people.
Knowing our communities.
Knowing what matters to us.
Building relationships.
Finding our collective voice.
And organizing for the change we want to see.

This is just the beginning.

We are grateful for everyone who showed up, participated, asked questions, shared their stories, and leaned into this important work.

Faith. Relationships. Organizing. Action.

Let’s keep building. Let’s keep learning. And let’s keep putting faith into action. 💙✊🏾

📣 FAITH IN ACTION — IMPORTANT TRAINING UPDATE!

First AME Church is excited to welcome clergy, lay leaders, ministry leaders, and community leaders for our Faith in Action Community Organizing Training!

Our training has been adjusted to a ONE-DAY introductory session designed to equip participants with foundational tools for faith-based community organizing, relationship-building, leadership, and transformative action.

🍳 A FULL BREAKFAST WILL BE PROVIDED!
Please note that lunch will not be served, as our training will conclude at noon.
