A Portion of the Gospel Lesson: Matthew 18:15-20
"For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them." (Matthew 18:20)
Reflection:
Relationships can be complicated.
Sometimes someone says something that hurts us. Sometimes we misunderstand one another. Sometimes disagreements grow simply because nobody is willing to have the conversation that needs to happen.
Jesus understood that life together wouldn't always be easy—even among people of faith.
In Matthew 18, Jesus gives his followers some remarkably practical advice: when there is a problem between you and another person, go and talk to them.
Not about them.
Not around them.
Not to six other people first.
Talk to them.
Jesus isn't pretending that conflict can always be resolved neatly. But he reminds us that reconciliation begins when we are willing to listen, speak honestly, extend grace, and remember that the person on the other side of the disagreement is still someone God loves.
And then comes the promise: "Where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them."
Christ is present not only when everything is peaceful and everyone agrees. Christ is also present in the difficult conversations, the attempts at forgiveness, and the courageous work of repairing relationships.
As we gather for worship this Sunday, we'll consider what it means to live together as a community shaped not by avoiding conflict, but by grace, honesty, forgiveness, and the presence of Christ among us.
