The teaching of this passage is one of the most hated and most denied doctrines of Christianity. It is the teaching that all humanity is totally corrupt. There is no inherent goodness in us, no divine spark within us, nothing in ourselves that can rescue us from the righteous judgment of God for our sin. We may not like that portrait of humanity. We may disagree with it. We may even find it offensive. But whether we agree with the portrait or not makes no difference. Because here is the rub: This is not man's picture of humanity. This is God's picture of humanity.
