✝️ 𝗔𝗠𝗕𝗢 𝗢𝗥 𝗟𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗡? 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗬 𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗔𝗠𝗘
Have you ever wondered why some churches have a special place from which the Bible is proclaimed?
You may have heard it called a “lectern,” while others call it an “ambo.”
Although the two can look similar, there is an important distinction.
✝️ 𝟭. 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗔𝗡 𝗔𝗠𝗕𝗢?
The 𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗼 is the designated place in the church from which the Word of God is proclaimed.
It is not simply a stand for holding books.
In the Catholic liturgy, the ambo has a special dignity because it is associated particularly with the proclamation of Sacred Scripture.
The readings from Scripture are normally proclaimed from the ambo, including the Responsorial Psalm and the Gospel.
The homily may also be preached from the ambo, although it may be given from another suitable place according to the Church's liturgical norms.
This is why the ambo should be treated with reverence.
It is a place where the Word of God is proclaimed to the assembled Church.
✝️ 𝟮. 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗔 𝗟𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗡?
A 𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 is more generally a reading or speaking stand.
It can be used for announcements, introductions, speeches, notices, presentations, or other forms of public speaking.
In some churches, especially where the sanctuary has limited space, the terms “ambo” and “lectern” may be used interchangeably.
But liturgically, the ambo has a more specific purpose and dignity.
The important question is not merely what the furniture is called, but what it is being used for.
✝️ 𝟯. 𝗪𝗛𝗬 𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗠𝗕𝗢 𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗧?
Because Catholic worship gives great importance to the proclamation of God's Word.
At Mass, we do not simply read a religious book.
God's Word is proclaimed to His people.
The Church therefore gives the place of proclamation a particular dignity.
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal teaches that the dignity of the Word of God requires a suitable place for its proclamation and that the ambo should be used according to its nature.
The ambo therefore helps us understand something important:
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗠𝗔𝗦𝗦 𝗜𝗦 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗢𝗡𝗟𝗬 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗛𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗗𝗦.
It is about listening to God.
✝️ 𝟰. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗟𝗧𝗔𝗥 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗠𝗕𝗢
There is also a beautiful relationship between the altar and the ambo.
The altar is intimately associated with the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
The ambo is associated with the Liturgy of the Word.
At Mass, we are nourished from the two tables:
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗧𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗗
and
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗧𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗘𝗨𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗜𝗦𝗧.
We hear Christ proclaimed in the Scriptures and receive Christ in the Eucharist.
This is why the Word and Eucharist belong so profoundly together in the celebration of Mass.
✝️ 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗘𝗘𝗣𝗘𝗥 𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗧𝗛
The next time you see the ambo, don't simply see a wooden or marble stand.
Remember what happens there.
The Scriptures are proclaimed.
The Gospel is announced.
The Church listens.
And through the proclaimed Word, God speaks to His people.
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my path.” — Psalm 119:105
So when the reader approaches the ambo, listen attentively.
When the Gospel is proclaimed, stand with reverence.
When the Word of God is heard, allow it to enter not only your ears, but also your mind and heart.
𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗠𝗕𝗢 𝗜𝗦 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗔 𝗣𝗜𝗘𝗖𝗘 𝗢𝗙 𝗖𝗛𝗨𝗥𝗖𝗛 𝗙𝗨𝗥𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘.
It serves the proclamation of the Word of God.
And the Word of God deserves our attention, reverence, and obedience.
✝️ 𝗦𝗔𝗬 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗢𝗗𝗔𝗬
“Lord, open my ears to hear Your Word, my mind to understand it, and my heart to live it. Amen.”
