When I was in college I decided to take a class where we studied the major world religions.
I went into the class with a very pious viewpoint. I would be examining these other religions not for what I could learn and glean,
but rather to prove and show, how right Christianity was and how incredibly wrong these other religions were.
Last year I completed my masters in Interreligious Studies, where I had the opportunity to learn with and from people from the three Abrahamic faiths: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
Having the opportunity to meet and interact with people from other religions instead of simply reading their sacred texts, was life-giving and life-changing.
When you have a chance to meet and get to know another person on a personal, face to face level, it makes it much harder to objectify them.
My invitation for each of us this summer is to step outside our current context and comfort zone and take the risk to meet and interact with people who are different then you religiously, racially, socio-economically, educationally, and by doing so we will have the opportunity to experience the expansive beauty of humanity that God has created.
