Friends and community, in the midst of this Labor Day weekend, we want to invite you to come join us for worship this Sunday (September 6th) at Horn Lake United Methodist Church! Come join us as we work on becoming the church that God intended!

Sermon: “The Discipline that God Intended”
Matthew 18: 15-20

Why did God create the church? The American theologian Stanley Hauerwas once said that "The church is constituted as a new people who have been gathered from the nations to remind the world that we are in fact one people." To that end, our worship focus for the month of September is simply called “Becoming the Church That God Intended.” This week, we explore the concept of Christian discipline as it pertains to the inevitable conflict that occurs within the body of believers. The process laid out in this week’s Scripture lesson is one that has stood the test of time, yet is rarely practiced. How do we move from the sins of gossip and doing harm to the holy practice of lifting others up by following the example set forth by Christ as shown in the Scriptures?

We will also be partaking in the sacrament of Holy Communion, so you’ll not want to miss! 🍇🥖

Here at Horn Lake United Methodist Church, there is a real sense of new beginnings stirring among us. Whether you have been part of this church family for fifty years or you are just now finding your way through our doors, I want you to know: you are wanted here. You are needed here. And this September, there is a place for you to belong, to grow, and to serve alongside people who love you and love Jesus.

This September, we're beginning a new worship series called "Becoming the Church God Intended," and it's built on a verse that has been tugging at my heart for weeks now. First Peter 4:11 says, "Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ."

Did you catch that? Whatever we do — whatever we say, however we serve — it's meant to point back to God. Not to us. Not to our own effort or our own reputation as a church. To God. That's the heartbeat of this whole series. Over the next four weeks, we're going to walk through four qualities that mark a church that truly reflects Jesus. We'll start with Discipline, from Matthew 18:15-20, and talk honestly about what it looks like to hold one another accountable in love, not judgment. Then we'll move into Forgiveness, from Matthew 18:21-35 — that hard, freeing, sometimes seventy-times-seven kind of forgiveness that Jesus calls us to. From there we'll talk about Courage, from Philippians 1:21-30, because living for Christ takes backbone, and Paul knew that better than most of us ever will. And we'll close the series with Righteousness, from Matthew 21:23-32, wrestling with what it really means to live in a way that lines up with what we say we believe.

I promise you, this isn't going to be four weeks of feeling beat up. This is going to be four weeks of hope — because becoming the church God intended isn't about achieving perfection. It's about leaning into grace, together. I hope you'll make plans to be here every Sunday this month. Bring your Bible, bring your questions, and bring your heart wide open.

Sermon: “I AM”
Exodus 3: 1-15

Perhaps one of the most famous and beloved “old, old story” of the Bible is the one of Moses and the burning bush. In the early days of Bible school, many of us were taught that God took on the form of the bush in order to deliver instruction. While that is true, there is so much more to this encounter than meets the eye. First, when Moses asks God his name, God responds “Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh” (אֶהְיֶה אֲשֶׁר אֶהְיֶה), which means “I Am Who I Am” and “I Will Be Who I Will Be.” In other words, God is telling Moses that the name doesn’t matter as much as the instruction which, in Moses’ case, is to lead God’s people out of slavery in Egypt. Secondly, Moses is in the wilderness, having fled Egypt—and God “interrupts” him anyway. And lastly, Moses gives off an attitude of insecurity, yet God uses him anyway because His strength is made perfect through our weaknesses and shortcomings. So, when you receive instructions from God, what is your immediate response? Are you willing to let your uncertainties and insecurities keep you from following through?

Sermon: “An Ultimate Act of Bravery”
Exodus 1:8-2:10

This week’s Scripture passage details two things. The first is the decree made by the pharaoh of Israel to have all Jewish male children killed upon birth. The second details the birth of Moses. Because Moses was born to a Hebrew woman, his mother hides him for three months in defiance of Pharaoh’s decree to kill Hebrew boys. Eventually, the child is sent down the Nile in a basket before he is adopted by the daughter of the pharaoh. Let’s stop there for a moment. Can you imagine the agony and bravery it must have taken for this mother to release her own child down a river—a river especially known for conquest? Can you imagine what kind of faith is required to do such a thing? It’s the ultimate act of bravery to release anything we hold of value to God, trusting Him completely. In the case of Moses, it paid off. In a divine twist of fate, the woman whom the daughter of pharaoh hires to nurse him is none other than his own mother. And Moses himself would come to be God’s leader of the Hebrew people out of exile. God always has a plan. Now isn’t that an awesome “old, old story?”

Sermon: “Out of the Remnant”
Genesis 45: 1-15

This “old, old story” of Joseph revealing his identity to his brothers who had sold him into slavery paints a vivid picture of some major theological themes. There’s reconciliation demonstrated by his reunification with family members. There’s grace, which is the undeserved favor he shows to his brothers who betrayed him. There’s protection in that God watched over Joseph throughout his ordeal. And, lastly, there’s restoration. And restoration is the crux of this story since God’s plans for Joseph was to preserve a “remnant.” Why is this important? It’s important because this remnant is just a very small part of a far greater covenant. God’s purpose for sparing Joseph was to ensure not just the survival of his family, but the entire nation of Israel! This was done in order to fulfill God’s promises. Isn’t it amazing how the small things in our eyes are actually the big things in God’s eyes

Sermon: “The Dreamer”
Genesis 37: 1-4, 12-28

One of the most poignant of the “old, old stories” is this week’s passage, which details the betrayal of Joseph by his brothers. We know that this betrayal was driven by intense jealousy over their father Jacob's favoritism and Joseph’s prophetic dreams. Joseph is stripped of his robe, cast into a pit, and sold into slavery for twenty pieces of silver, setting the stage for his journey to Egypt. But it’s amazing that God can use even this—a situation where there is family turmoil and malicious intent—to lead humanity towards a higher purpose. That’s how a faith journey works. We have to trust that in all things, God is in control. So how does this connect to the greater narrative of the New Testament? Well, you tell me. Does Joseph being betrayed by his own people remind you of anyone in particular?

Heavenly Father, as our children go back to school, we lift them up to You. We pray for their safety. We pray that all anxieties will be cast away. We pray that You would fill them with the knowledge of Your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding. Help them to discern right from wrong and make choices that align with Your principles. Therefore, we ask that You guide our children to walk in a manner worthy of You. May their actions, words, and attitudes bring glory to Your name. Empower them to be a positive influence in their schools, shining Your light in a world that needs it. Amen.

Sermon: “Havoc on the Jabbok”
Genesis 32: 22-31

“The church cannot 'unhitch' from the Old Testament without unhitching from the gospel Jesus preached.” I don’t know who wrote or said this, but it strikes at the very heart of why it is important for the church to continue hearing the Word of God from the Hebrew Bible, also known as the Old Testament. While the New Covenant succeeds the Old Covenant, the two are inseparable partners. The New Testament is "saturated" with the Old, containing over 1,000 direct or indirect quotes, emphasizing their shared story. For our worship focus series this month, we are going to be looking at the “old, old story” and how the salvific stories of Genesis and Exodus tie into the larger Gospel narrative. This week, we explore the story of Jacob as he wrestles with an unnamed man at the Jabbok River. Even though he was injured during the holy altercation, Jacob walks away with a different kind of victory. Have you ever wrestled with God only to find out that a different kind of victory awaited you?

God's story is still being written, right here among us! This month's worship series, "An Old, Old Story: Genesis and Exodus for All of Us,” walks us through Jacob wrestling at the Jabbok, Joseph's betrayal by his brothers, and their tearful reconciliation. These aren't neat, tidy stories; they're messy, human, and real. Just like us. But God shows up in the wrestling, in the wounds, and in the reunions. We'll close the series with the call of Moses, an ordinary man given an extraordinary mission. As we near the end of summer, we trust God is doing the same restoring work among us.

As we move through this "old, old story" together, I invite you to ask: where does my story intersect with God's? Maybe you're wrestling like Jacob, healing like Joseph, or being called like Moses. Whatever chapter you're in, know this — God's story continues through us. Come join us this August and bring a friend along for the journey!
