Everyone is invited to join us for the Social Justice Council meeting after our UU service on May 24. Service is from 10-11:30 am. The meeting is from 12-1:30 pm.

Where? Rockford Grange (4262 Barrett Dr. Hood River, OR)

Prior to the meeting, we will have a Social Justice table set up where people can learn about ongoing environmental issues, and sign up to table at the Juneteenth celebration and the Back to School event for Native American students.

The meeting itself will start at noon downstairs in the Grange. As always, our focus will be on organizing, strategizing, sharing knowledge and learning, processing and reflecting, and welcoming new people and new ideas. After an opening exercise with Rev. Barbara, we will have a brief report from the leadership team and then updates on our current initiatives in the areas of immigration, environmental justice, sustainability, and democracy and voting. Some specific areas where we are getting ready to take action include a Get Out the Vote initiative and considering whether we might want to embark on a common read. And there will be time available to brainstorm new projects as well.

Anyone who has ideas about social justice, is ready to roll up their sleeves and get to work, or just wants to learn more is invited to attend. The more, the merrier! For those who can’t attend in person, a Zoom link will be available. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Pat Evenson-Brady at [email protected].

Reverend Barbara Prose has this to say:

Scholar, theologian, ordained Unitarian Universalist minister, journalist, author, and Emmy award-winning television producer, she was given the Xhosa name Thandeka, which means “beloved,” by Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 1984. Thandeka, is also the one who coined the term "love beyond belief", as the core principle of Affect Theology.

In Thandeka’s own words, “Liberal faith begins with transformed and uplifted feelings that exalt the human soul and let us love beyond belief, come what may.”

Her goal is to transform “corpse cold” churches (as Ralph Waldo Emerson put it) into sanctuaries that warm and elevate the human heart, inspiring folks to stand strong on the side of love.

As we explore what the concept of God or Love means to us this month, I am happy to respond to Elaine Castle, our worship team leader’s request of me, “Please preach on what love beyond belief is.”
