What A Friend!
Remember that “best friend’ you had in college, high school, or even
grade school? The friend with whom you made the promise to be “friends
forever.” The friend that for some reason you have not seen or heard from
in ages till one day you connect, whether it was an accidental meeting at
the airport, a class reunion, or even a planned meeting.
One of two things took place as you sat down to talk. On the one
hand, once the past was fully revered and remembered there was silence.
Uncomfortable silence. Silence that is broken with an awkward question,
something like, “So… what are you doing now?” A great amount of small
talk follows with goodbye’s spoken and the typical farewell, “we will have to
get together sometime soon, this was fun! Was it really?
On the other hand you and your friend can’t stop talking. Your lives
take on an abundance of energy talking about anything and everything.
Discussing family, jobs, politics, and dreams. It appears your lives have
picked up where they left off many years ago. These are the friendships
we all desire. They are forgiving, loving, compassionate, and well worth
our time. We truly find ourselves wondering, “Why have I not spent more
time with this friend?”
What a Friend we have in Jesus! This is more than an old hymn.
This is a truth that many of us miss due to our busy lives and our wayward
activities. Jesus wants to spend time with us. We on the other hand
become so busy with life that time with Jesus seems to get in the way of
our activities.
Yet, we discover the truth of this friendship in times of trouble, when
grief captures our hearts and lives. We realize how much we need the care
and compassion that silent time with our Savior can bring. We begin to
realize, it has been too long, we do not know what to say. In that moment
of nothingness, we can almost hear our name being called and an invitation
given, “Come (you) who are thirsty, come.” (Rev. 22:17) Oh, what a Friend
we do have in Jesus.
Is it any wonder that God gave us the Third Commandment,
“Remember the Sabbath Day to Keep it holy. Six days you will labor, and
do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.”
(Exodus 20:8-9a) Jesus does the heavy work of lifting us. He will never be
far from us.
See all of you this Sunday.
