The Sabbath was a day set aside for rest and worship. God commanded a Sabbath because human beings need to spend unhurried time in worship and rest each week. A God who is concerned enough to provide a day each week for us to rest is indeed wonderful. To observe a regular time of rest and worship in our fast-paced world demonstrates how important God is to us, and it gives us the extra benefit of refreshing our spirits. Don't neglect God's provision. In this crazy, busy world, we tend to lose sight of this being one of God's Ten Commandments.

Part of the result of Jesus being highly exalted is that all people, ultimately, will be in submission to Him. This is phrased in terms including every possible being. Those "in heaven" could include angels and saints who have passed away already. Those "on earth" clearly refer to people living now, or more specifically at the time Paul was writing this letter. Those "under the earth" could include those who have already died and perhaps the Devil and evil spirits who must submit to the power of the Lord (Revelation 20).

This understanding is also enhanced after looking at verse 11, which refers to every "tongue" confessing Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. In the future, every being will bow before the Lord, the ultimate reward for the Lord Jesus Christ who became the ultimate servant during His time on earth.

What kind of God does nature reveal? Nature shows us a God of might, intelligence, and intricate detail. A God of order and beauty; a God who controls powerful forces. That is general revelation. Through special revelation (the Bible and the coming of Jesus), we learn about God's love and forgiveness, and the promise of eternal life. Two words describe faith: confidence and assurance. These two qualities need a secure beginning and ending point. The beginning point of faith is believing in God's character-he is who he says. The end point is believing in God's promises-he will do what he says. When we believe that God will fulfill his promises even though we don't see those promises materializing yet, we demonstrate true faith.

False prophets were common in Old Testament times. They prophesied only what the king and the people wanted to hear, claiming it was God's message. Jesus indicated that false prophets were just as prevalent in his time. False teachers are just as common today. Jesus says to beware of those whose words sound religious but who are motivated by money, fame, or power. You can tell who they are because in their teaching they minimize Christ and glorify themselves.

God's love is total, says Paul. It reaches every corner of our experience. It is wide-it covers the breadth of our own experience, and it reaches out to the whole world. God's love is long-it continues the length of our lives. It is high-it reaches to the depths of discouragement, despair, and even death. When you feel shut out or isolated, remember that you can never be lost to God's love. You can ask the Holy Spirit to fill every aspect of your life to the fullest.

Mark your calendars for Sunday, September 13th! Maple Spring Church will be having our 2nd annual community picnic at the church grove. We loved seeing 250 in attendance last year! Outdoor worship service begins at 10:00 with a free lunch provided afterwards. There will be live music provided by Glory Guys United Through Christ, Scott Schmitt, and Greater Johnstown Christian Fellowship Praise & Worship Team. We will have crafts, a bouncy slide, carnival games, face painting, a Kona Ice truck (each child receives a free Kona ice!) and Trinity Farms Center for Healing will be there with goats. Come worship and fellowship with us! Also, pray for no rain!! :)

The three commands in this verse are key to the emotional and spiritual well-being of every Christian.

The first command to Christians is to rejoice in hope. Often, we resist instruction about what we should feel: that we should change our attitudes to be joyful. The idea here, though, is more about declaring ourselves as having reason for joy. It's not a command to be happy, but to have the right perspective on our situation. We should agree with God that our hope is worth rejoicing over. What hope? Paul is referring to the hope of the redemption of our bodies and being united with our Father forever once our adoption is complete (Romans 8:23–24).

The next command is to be patient in tribulation or affliction. This becomes much easier if we are keeping the other two commands. Those who see their future worth celebrating and who pray to the Father continually will have a much easier time being patient during hardship. Paul is not downplaying the genuine pain of those experiences. Life can be unpleasant, and not all moments are happy moments. Yet Paul has pointed out that the struggles of life on earth are not worth comparing with the glory to come (Romans 8:18). So, we wait with patience (Romans 8:25). The final command of the verse also connects with Paul's thoughts in Romans chapter 8. We're commanded to be constant in prayer, or to keep praying continually. During any time of suffering, while waiting for what we're hoping in, we should pray. Prayer brings a connection with our Father through the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:26–27). He hears, understands, and helps in response to even our clumsiest attempts to communicate with Him.

Please pray for a woman who has lung cancer which has spread in her chest. She begins 6 weeks of radiation and chemotherapy treatments tomorrow.

Pray for a woman who has passed away and also for her family.

Please keep the people of Nepal in your prayers after the recent disaster that hit that area. Pray for those who lost their lives along with their grieving families, the people who are still missing and their families, and the rescue workers. Let us also pray that the world helps all of these individuals through this overwhelmingly destructive event.

God knew you, as he knew Jeremiah, long before you were born or even conceived. He thought about you and planned for you. When you feel discouraged or inadequate, remember that God has always thought of you as valuable and that he has a purpose in mind for you.

God has a purpose for each Christian, but some people are appointed by God for specific kinds of work. Whatever work you do should be done for the glory of God (Philippians 1:11). If God gives you a specific call or assignment, then seek to fulfill the mission common to all believers-to love, obey and serve God-until his guidance becomes more clear.
