Every summer, we ask our church family to step into one of our Table Kids classrooms for a Sunday or two, giving our regular volunteers a chance to rest while parents and friends get a front row seat to what God is doing in our kids.

So what happens when people show up to serve kids they don't normally serve? We wanted to find out so we asked them: how has God met you through serving here?

The answers pointed us back to something Jesus modeled a long time ago. We read in the gospel of John that in the moment right before Jesus washes his disciples' feet, he knew the Father had put all things under his power. He knew exactly who he was. And knowing that, he got up from the table and got on his knees to serve. He also promised that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to the children we were serving alongside. That's the posture of the Kingdom — and when we serve each other, it opens a window for us to see Jesus in the rooms most people walk past.

This Saturday, we're hosting our first Serve 101 class. If you're already serving here, or it's your first time, we would love for you to register and get connected! There are so many different ways to get involved, and we can't wait to see how Jesus meets you when you serve.

This morning, we're walking and praying around the neighborhood schools in our community. And whether you can join us or not, we wanted to put these prayer prompts in your hands.

Because the schools in our community don't just need better programs or more resources. They need the presence of God. And as children of God, we get to ask our Father for that.

Pray for the students finding their footing in a new year. Pray for the teachers pouring themselves out every day. Pray for the administrators making decisions that shape thousands of lives. Pray for the families holding it all together at home.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help. Let's ask Him to be exactly that in every classroom, every hallway, every campus.

The building is just a building.

What makes TCC a church has nothing to do with the walls we gather in. The church is the people squeezed into a living room. The volunteer on their knees playing with toddlers. The generations stopping to talk in the lobby. The hands raised in a dark room full of people encountering God together. We are the dwelling place of God.

A new school year, a new season, and a lot of good things on the horizon.

September at TCC looks like walking and praying around neighborhood schools, gathering around Scripture, learning about our family in India, training our volunteers, and making space at the table for anyone who's still getting to know us. This week, we were in Revelation 19, and we saw that Jesus is Faithful and True, the Word of God, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. We saw that at the name of Jesus, every knee will bow — in heaven, on earth, and under the earth. Some will bow willingly and joyfully, because they’ve placed their faith in the only one who can save. Some will bow in defeat, in forced submission — and there will be no joy in it at all.

There’s one catalyst that makes all the difference. The thing that makes submission actually joyful.

It’s that Jesus isn’t asking us to do something He wasn’t willing to do Himself. The One every knee will bow before — He bowed low first. Before the King rode out on the white horse to conquer anything, He knelt in submission to His Father at a cross. He didn’t just demand our submission. Instead, He modeled it.

That’s the gospel.

Not that God is coming to force you into submission someday — but that Jesus already bowed low enough to make your submission today feel like worship, now and forever.

We see atrocities all over the place, and one day Jesus will set every one of them right. But right now, in this moment — where is He calling you to trust Him? Where is He actively pursuing you, inviting you to bend the knee before that day comes?

Because here’s what makes this different from every other kind of surrender: you’re not bowing to someone who’s never bowed. He knelt first. So whatever this is — the thing on your mind right now, the thing you’ve been standing over instead of kneeling before — you get to bring it to someone who already knows what it costs to bow low.

Take a second. Close your eyes. Stop scrolling. He’s already knelt for you — now bend the knee back. Not in defeat. In worship. It’s in this place that you’ll find the freedom you’ve been looking for.

Everything we do at TCC is rooted in one thing: the Gospel.

The Good News of Jesus — His sinless life, sacrificial death, victorious resurrection, and future return to make all things new. This is the genesis of everything we do here at TCC. Every teaching, every worship gathering, every Bible study, every program finds its origin here. Because the Word of God is the true story of the whole world and all who live therein, and the Gospel is its center.

This is why Gospel Rootedness is one of our core values. It's our commitment to keep returning to the source — so that everything we do, everything we offer, and everyone we become flows from it.

During Sunday's message on Revelation 19, Shane invited us to Hallelujah. Hallelujah, broken down to its roots, is a command: You. Praise. God. And he gave us a framework, or a pathway, if you will, toward praising God.

Deliberately focus on God’s qualities.
Attribute every good to God’s generosity and practice gratitude.
Move through honest lament to praise.

So take a few moments to breathe. Lift your focus from your phone, what you just watched, what's going on around the world or in your own life...and focus on the qualities of God. His goodness. His love. His faithfulness toward you. Bring to your mind a moment where God came through for you. Where He answered a prayer. Where He blessed you. Where He spoke to you. Where you felt His presence. Meet Him there. And allow yourself the freedom to spontaneously respond through gratitude, physical movement, through words of affection toward Him.

If you're not used to this, it may feel weird. And that's okay! But know that He is there, and He loves you. Even your weird. Then ask Him to show Himself to you.

And if you're in a season of mourning, be honest with the Lord. Give Him your hurt, frustration, sadness... Welcome Him into that space. Then after a while of sitting in your hurt and voicing it to Him, turn your mind to the qualities of God and ask Him to show Himself, even in the midst of the chaos that's surrounding you.

Through all of this, allow yourself permission to be free in how you share your love, your questions, and your observations with the Lord. Don't feel like you have to hold back. He wants every part of you and His love will meet you and satisfy you.

Raise a hallelujah, with everything inside of you. Raise a hallelujah, and declare that fear has lost its hold on you.

You. Praise. God.

Every hand at this table has a part to play.

Ephesians says we are saved by grace through faith, not by anything we have done. But the very next breath says something worth sitting with: we were created in Christ Jesus to do good works, works that God prepared in advance for us to do.

In other words, His grace doesn't just change us, it propels us into action. We weren't saved by our works, but we were absolutely saved to do them. When Jesus was asked how to pray, He told His disciples to pray like this... Pray, "Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven." We didn't do anything to earn our part in the Kingdom. But by God's grace, we have a part to play in ushering the Kingdom into Washington County as it is in Heaven.

It's hard to find much that's stable these days. Inflation keeps climbing. Everything is on fire. Wars are raging around the world. Things at home can be dicey. Who knows what's coming with the next round of layoffs... What do we do?

"Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire." Hebrews 12:28-29 (ESV)

This world always devolves into chaos. But we can place our stability in a kingdom that is not of this world. That's why we pray, "Lord, Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." Because the Kingdom of God is unlike anything on this earth, we realize that not only can we trust Him, we begin to see that He is holy. Completely different. Set apart, beautiful in every way. When we search for something good, we find Him, because every good and perfect gift comes from Him.

So what do we do with that? Give Him a high five, say thanks, then dip out and do what we want? Absolutely not. Our responsibility is to approach our King with reverence and awe. Honor Him, praise Him, thank Him for all the good He has made and given.

Then there's the pinch... Put down the lesser things. The things we typically run to... and turn our eyes to Jesus. Maybe that means you stop scrolling for a bit after this. Put your phone down, close your eyes, and tell the Lord the areas where you're anxious, fearful, worried. Welcome the Holy Spirit into those areas, and ask Him to show Himself in your weakness. 2 Corinthians 12:9 in the Message says it like this: "My grace is enough; it's all you need. My strength comes into its own in your weakness."

Our God is strong, and He is a consuming fire. He will purify you and remove the things that are killing you and turning your affections away from Him, because He loves you. He wants to see you flourish, and He knows that's only possible in Him, because He is life itself.

So meet Him there. In your weakness. Put down the lesser things. And find your grounding in Him. Because He loves you. And you are safe in Him.

We asked people who were baptized at this year's celebration one question: in one word, what has God given you?

Joy. Peace. Everything. Life. Hope. Faith. Truth.

These aren't just words. They're the testimony of people who decided that Jesus is worth declaring publicly, worth giving their whole lives to, worth going under the water for.
