WHY do we sing Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost ... because that's one of the basics of Christianity, that's why! And our Fire Queens learned how kind and strong and brave that Fire from the Holy Ghost can make them.

Wanda Keller Barstow Marquart, 103, of Westminster Woods on Julington Creek, Saint Johns, Florida passed away on May 17, 2026. She was one of the "do-ers" in CUMC up until her early 70s, when she decided she had wearied of cooking and cleaning and moved to Westminster Woods - 32 years ago! hahaha!

She was born in St Augustine and was a longtime resident of Hastings, prior to moving to Westminster Woods in 1994, where she was active in bible study and vesper services.

She joined Christ United Methodist Church at 12 years of age and was one of our many active "church ladies". She helped manage a farm operation until 1986. She was proud of being able to hold a baby in her arms while planting cabbage plants in the early days of her farming experiences. She loved playing bridge with her Hastings friends. Morning coffee was her favorite time of day.
Wanda was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Barstow, her second husband, Erv Marquart, her son, Wayne Barstow, her brother, Ed Keller, her sister, Joan McCool and her parents, Ed and Alice Keller.

She is survived by son, Dale Barstow (Laura), five grandchildren, Sam Barstow (Becky), Ginger Lindsay (Mike), Pam Daniel (Ken), Lance Barstow and Donny Barstow (Kristen), two step-grandchildren, Mike Scranton and Diane Hutcheson, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

We celebrate All Saints' Day in the Methodist Church in the fall. These are the folks we remember on that Special Sunday. They are why we are still here and still serving. Our greatest appreciation and sympathy to her many friends and family.

A celebration of her long and giving life will be held on Monday, June 8, 11:00 a.m., at Johnson-Overturf Chapel, 307 S Palm Ave, Palatka FL 32177 with Rev. Dr. Thomas Norrell of CUMC officiating. No public visitation is scheduled.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Community Hospice and Palliative Care. Contributions can be made at (https://thefoundationcares.org/give/) or to Christ United Methodist Church Hastings. Checks should be made payable to CUMC and mailed to P O Box 17, Hastings FL 32145. Since 1908, Florida Methodists have focused on our children. Starting with an orphanage, this mission has opened up to help children in poor environments to thrive, with campuses in Enterprise and Madison. Providing trauma counseling, foster care and foster care training, independent living, and HOPE for children and families across this state. Christ UMC has NEVER missed the call for these children through our second-mile giving - that's a fact. Our parents and grandparents and beyond knew the worth of every child and WE DO, TOO.

Join us to celebrate this rain this week on TRINITY SUNDAY, 11:00a - 12:00p. After the excitement of Pentecost last Sunday, let's talk a little about how that Holy Spirit fits into The Big Picture, AND pick up your June calendar. IT'S BUSY! While Sunday Adult Sunday School will be on summer hiatus, we want to know who all is interested in a study on Acts for the summer, on Tuesdays at 7:00p via Zoom. Put your TWO CENTS in at church or in the comments below. The books are ordered. And, besides, it's always a good time to come and learn and sing and pray and fellowship and GET YOUR GOD ON!

PENTECOST SUNDAY, MAY 24: What's it all about, Alfie?
READ ACTS 2
Called by many the birthday of the church, Pentecost represents a passing of the mantle of sorts—from the Incarnate Christ to the ever-present Spirit, the reminder of the God within, the sustainer, the teacher, the strengthener. Pentecost is a day of celebration for all that God has done and is doing within the life of the church.

Pentecost always occurs fifty days after Easter Sunday. This is why its date changes every year. Since Easter itself does not have a fixed date and is based on the lunar calendar, Pentecost also moves each year. Easter is calculated as the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. Once the date of Easter is known, Pentecost is simply counted forward by fifty days. This places Pentecost on a Sunday, seven weeks after Easter.

The name “Pentecost” comes from a Greek word meaning “fiftieth,” reflecting this exact timing.

In the Bible, Pentecost was originally a Jewish feast known as the Feast of Weeks, as explained in the post What Is the Feast of Weeks in the Bible? It was celebrated fifty days after Passover and was associated with the harvest. This explains why many people from different regions were present in Jerusalem in Acts 2.

For Christians, Pentecost took on a deeper meaning.
It became the day when the Holy Spirit came upon the followers of Jesus, which is clearly explained in What Happened on Pentecost? Acts 2 Explained in Simple Terms. This event marked the beginning of the spread of the Christian message. It was not planned by human effort. It began with divine action.

Understanding the date helps place the event in context. Pentecost is not an isolated moment. It follows the resurrection of Jesus and continues the sequence of events that began at Easter.

Each year, Pentecost reminds believers of the same event recorded in Acts 2. It marks the moment when fear turned into boldness and when a small group became a growing movement.
