The Mount Clinton Mennonite Church meeting house is located in western Rockingham county about half a mile west of the village of Mount Clinton. We wor

ship God together, desire to follow Jesus more closely each day, and give witness to God’s salvation in our own lives, through the Holy Spirit to all those around us, and to the world. We meet on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. for Sunday school followed by our worship service at 10:30 a.m. We meet in person at the meeting house and also broadcast it as Zoom and Facebook live sessions. We worship God together in singing, reading scripture, sharing our joys and sorrows in prayer, and hearing God’s Word preached. We pray together the 2nd and 4th Wednesday evenings of each month at 7:00 p.m. Both women and men have monthly meetings. We have several small groups that meet monthly or every two weeks for a meal, sharing, and prayer together. We love fellowshipping together and have monthly potluck lunch Fellowship Meals, usually on the first Sunday of the month. We consider each of our members to be ambassadors for Jesus and also have members who are serving in evangelism and other Christian service work around the world. We are nurses, farmers, students, and teachers of all ages, singles and families who together love Jesus. We believe the Gospel is good news for all of life, so we are involved in our local schools, and in our neighborhood, through visitation, clean up and rebuilding after natural disasters, supporting the local food pantry, and other ways. We are involved in local jail ministry and support those released from incarceration in a variety of ways. Our members serve and have served in evangelism, refugee work, and community development work around the world through Virginia Mennonite Missions, Mennonite Central Committee, and other Christian agencies. Whatever your situation in life we invite you to join us as we follow Jesus.

Camino Conversation

Last week we looked at how we can not be reborn into God’s family on our own. Just as our own physical birth came through our mother’s pain and anguish, so our rebirth as God’s child comes through God’s suffering in Jesus who like a mother has made our rebirth possible.

So then how do we continue in our new life? Anabaptists believe that rebirth is the first step in a new life with God. It begins with the Grace of God that we accept through our faith in God when we hear and believe the Word of God. This rebirth grows us into regenerated people who live humble, holy lives of devotion to the worship of God and service to our family and neighbors. Reborn persons make up families faithful, patient and loving to each other. They make up churches that together live into Kingdom of God ways of love to all, even enemies, refusal to take up war and violence. They stress the 3 mysterious symbols of the Christian life: baptism, the Lord’s Supper and belief for those old enough to choose the path of disciples. Withholding these things from infants and children actually increases their seriousness.

So being reborn gives us the wonderful opportunity to become a disciple of Jesus. Yes, our reborn life is fed by baptism, the Lord’s Supper and our beliefs. But we also have a role to play, we actively seek to be persons of humility, holiness and love in the way of Jesus. The reborn life is borrowed of course from Jesus just like our own physical life is in effect borrowed from our mother’s life. And as we need to keep our physical life up we also need to keep our borrowed spiritual life up. More on that next time.

Camino Conversation

Last week we saw that we cannot repent, make our own way back to God on our own. Jesus in John 3 calls this repentance a new birth. Or course no one can be born, much less be reborn, on their own. God became one of us to make our rebirth possible. Our own physical birth is an analogy for our God given birth. Someone went through great effort and pain, even risking death to birth us. And they thought we were worth it. Our spiritual birth is like that. Our mother went through a great ordeal to birth us: Jesus, God who became human, suffered great agony, even death to bring us a new birth. Jesus did not just risk his life he actually went through death in order to offer us new life. Jesus thought we were worth it.

I have heard people say that since Jesus was God, his suffering and death, “must have been easy for him.” But this is a great misunderstanding. Yes, perhaps the great suffering was easier because he was God, but it was only possible because he was God. But this is an odd way of understanding Jesus' offer of new birth. It would be like a child refusing the help of their teacher to learn their multiplication table because the teacher is a “grown up,” and has an advantage! Yes the teacher is a grown up, She has paved the way and that is precisely why she can help the student. In the same way Jesus has paved the way for us in order to help us.

So what is the next step for us? If we are reborn how can we continue on in this new life? Next time, how does the Christ life spread in us!

Camino Conversation

Last week we saw that our atonement is not a magical move on God’s part. Our break with God is real. God does not throw a cloth over it in some disappearing act. Our repentance is part of our atonement.

The catch is that the worse we are the more we need to repent but the less we are able to do it. The only person who can repent perfectly is the perfect person which none of us are. Plus the perfect person does not need to repent.

And repentance is not something God demands: it is simply a description of how we go back to God. Asking God to take us back without going back would be rather absurd after all. But our sin makes us unable to go back, so we need help-only God can help us go back. God helping us is nothing more than God lending something of himself to us. God lends us some reasoning power, now we can think. God lends us a little of His love, now we love each other. Like a parent holding her daughter’s hands so she can learn to write, God holds our hands as we learn to reason and love.

So because of our fall we need to learn to surrender, to suffer, even to die as we turn around. This is something God in his own nature never needs to do. God has never had to walk the road of turning around, submitting, dying. But God in order to help us must suffer and die also even though it is not in his nature. The only way then is for God to enter our human nature: God becomes a man in order to experience submission and death. And He can suffer and die perfectly because He is God.

The Apostle Paul says this succinctly in II Cor 5: 14-15 …one has died for all; therefore all have died, and he died for all so that those who live might live no longer for themselves but for Him who died and was raised for them.
