The Mount Clinton Mennonite Church meeting house is located in western Rockingham county about half a mile west of the village of Mount Clinton. We wor

ship God together, desire to follow Jesus more closely each day, and give witness to God’s salvation in our own lives, through the Holy Spirit to all those around us, and to the world. We meet on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. for Sunday school followed by our worship service at 10:30 a.m. We meet in person at the meeting house and also broadcast it as Zoom and Facebook live sessions. We worship God together in singing, reading scripture, sharing our joys and sorrows in prayer, and hearing God’s Word preached. We pray together the 2nd and 4th Wednesday evenings of each month at 7:00 p.m. Both women and men have monthly meetings. We have several small groups that meet monthly or every two weeks for a meal, sharing, and prayer together. We love fellowshipping together and have monthly potluck lunch Fellowship Meals, usually on the first Sunday of the month. We consider each of our members to be ambassadors for Jesus and also have members who are serving in evangelism and other Christian service work around the world. We are nurses, farmers, students, and teachers of all ages, singles and families who together love Jesus. We believe the Gospel is good news for all of life, so we are involved in our local schools, and in our neighborhood, through visitation, clean up and rebuilding after natural disasters, supporting the local food pantry, and other ways. We are involved in local jail ministry and support those released from incarceration in a variety of ways. Our members serve and have served in evangelism, refugee work, and community development work around the world through Virginia Mennonite Missions, Mennonite Central Committee, and other Christian agencies. Whatever your situation in life we invite you to join us as we follow Jesus.

Last time we saw the Christian understanding that God is separate from the universe. The Goodness, Truth and Beauty we see in the universe was created and is sustained by God. In other words time, space, warmth, light, colors, tastes, animals, plants, the soil and life itself exist because of the inventiveness and creativity of God. And God is separate from the creation just as a carpenter uses their creativity to build a comfy house but exists apart from the house.

But here is the big question: If a good God made the world good, how did it go so wrong? The unbeliever might say it's easier to discard the idea of God and assume the universe just came to be in some random and mindless event or process over time.

The problem is that we all know there is much evil in the world, even in ourselves. But why do I believe evil exists? I don’t call a line crooked unless I have some notion of a straight line. What do I compare this world to when I call out evil or injustice? I have some sense of goodness or beauty in order to call something bad or ugly. If the universe is random and senseless it makes no sense to talk of evil or goodness. Denying the existence of God turns out to be too simplistic. Things are more complicated.

So it seems if we are going to believe in goodness or evil we must believe that God created a good universe and intends to save it from the evil that has infected it. If the universe were really random and meaningless we would never know it. Just as if there were no light we would not know it was dark, since darkness was all we could know. Dark would be a meaningless word to us.

Next time: The complications of believing in God.

How Jesus reveals God to us. Last week we discussed the 2 main ideas we have about God. One is what some call pantheism. This is the idea that the universe is somehow god and that god does not exist apart from the universe. The other view that Jews, Muslims and Christian hold is that God exists apart from and does not depend on anything else. God creates and holds the universe. The structure, matter, beauty and goodness of the universe comes from God’s invention and creative power and exists because of God’s will and desire. A singer or carpenter can put a lot of themselves into the song or the construction of the house but the house exists separate from the carpenter.

Here is another thing: If we think there is little difference between good and evil then it is easy to believe that god might just be in the universe. But if I believe that some things in the universe are really bad, for instance, and believe that God loves the good and hates the bad then it's hard to believe that God exists in the universe. I must believe that God is separate from the world. A pantheist can look at slavery and say, “well, from the divine point of view this might be good.” But a Christian says slavery is evil because we believe God really does hate evil.

The Christian faith is a warfare faith. It thinks God made the world in all its beauty, wonder, space, time, colors, tastes, plants and animals out of his own Love, Goodness and Truth. But it also insists that much has gone wrong in his invention. And it insists that God’s great plan is to make it all right. Put it back the way it should be. Delete evil and all that is wrong in the universe.

How Jesus reveals God to us. But first several ideas to clear up…One thing is this idea that to believe the Christian faith you must also believe that all other religions are wrong. In fact other religions contain some of the truth. It's atheists who must believe that all religions are one huge mistake. If you are a Christian you are free to thoughtfully examine other religions and be grateful for the truth they contain. In other words all religions contain some of the truth we learn from God revealed to us in Jesus. But of course being a Christian means that where they differ the Christian faith is the correct one. Just as in arithmetic there is only one right answer to the problem of 6+7= 13, but some wrong answers are closer to the correct one.

Most of humanity around the world believes in some kind of God. Only a small minority, mostly modern western materialists do not. So the next question is what kind of god? One idea is that god is in everything and that everything contains god. This is sometimes called pantheism (from the Greek meaning god in everything) and holds that the universe is part of god. In other words if the universe did not exist god would not exist. And while we human beings believe good and evil exist and are different this god is beyond good and evil. The other view including Jews, Muslims and Christians is that God exists apart from the universe and that God definitely takes sides on good and evil. This God loves love and hates hatred. This view of God also believes that God thought up and made the universe. The universe exists because of God but God does not exist because of the universe just as an artist does not exist because of her artwork. A cook does not die when someone eats the wonderful cake she baked. Next time: does it really matter which kind of god we believe in? -Pastor Jim

How the Good News of Jesus helps us. Last week we saw how the Christian faith helps us. It is for us a thing of unspeakable comfort. But it can only help us when we realize and admit we need help. It begins in distress at our condition. We have to go through the dismay to get to the comfort. But the comfort comes from speaking the truth about our condition. There are no shortcuts.

The comfort comes from realizing that only God can save us. The same God who is the Mind and Power behind the universe, the whole created order we live in, became one of us in order to clear out all the stuff that separates us. Naming the truth that wishful thinking or fighting will not open a way out for us is the first step. This truth helps us understand the next step; our beliefs and behaviors need to change. We need God to help us both understand and respond to this truth.

Since God made us and everything around we need to understand what the purposes are and how to live into the purposes God has created. That is the task of each of us. And much of the time we see these purposes only dimly. In our dimness we stagger around and skirting the purposes God made us for. The mess we create spreads around creating pain, loss, harm and destruction to us and many others. So we need God’s help to understand more completely how we can live into these purposes.

Next time who is this God and how can we know him better?
