“Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.”
On September 29, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, the Archangels.
This ancient feast was originally associated especially with St. Michael and the dedication of a church in his honor in Rome. Over time, the Church brought the three archangels named in Sacred Scripture together into one feast: Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael.
Their names reveal something about their mission.
Michael — “Who is like God?” — is the great defender against Satan and the forces of evil. In Revelation 12, Michael and his angels battle the dragon.
Gabriel — “God is my strength” — is the messenger of the Incarnation, sent to the Virgin Mary to announce that she would conceive Jesus Christ.
Raphael — “God heals” — appears in the Book of Tobit as a companion, guide, protector, and instrument of God’s healing.
Pope Francis once summarized their missions beautifully: Michael defends us, Gabriel brings us the Good News, and Raphael walks with us on the journey. (Vatican)
The angels are not myths, symbols, or cute decorations. They are spiritual creatures created by God who worship Him, serve His purposes, and participate in His plan of salvation.
So today, ask for their intercession.
St. Michael, defend us.
St. Gabriel, help us hear and proclaim the Gospel.
St. Raphael, guide and heal us on our journey toward Heaven.
Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, Archangels, pray for us. ⚔️🙏
