How do you like your coffee? Hot? Cold? Most people just agree on one thing: lukewarm is the worst. Jesus apparently felt the same way about the church in Laodicea. In the last of his seven letters, Jesus delivers a stunning verdict on a lukewarm church that had grown comfortable, prosperous and self-satisfied, and threatens to spit them out entirely. But buried inside the rebuke is one of the most tender invitations in all of Scripture. What does Jesus actually want from his church and from you?

Faithfulness can become exhausting. Pressure, opposition, disappointment, and weariness all tempt us to loosen our grip and give up. The church in Philadelphia knew what it felt like to have “little strength,” yet Jesus had something important to say to them in the middle of their struggle. In today’s message, we’ll wrestle with what Christ says to believers who are tired of enduring, and discover why holding on may matter more than we realize.

At Bluff Creek, we feel strongly about praying for one another. As Ephesians 6:18 reminds us, we should 'pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.' If you need prayer or know of someone who does, submit your request in one of three ways: through the Church Center App, the Prayer Request box in the foyer, or on our Bluff Creek Prayer page on Facebook.

The call of Christ on all Christians is to continually increase in love and faithfulness. To do so requires that we not settle for less, especially when Christ calls us to more. The book of Revelation records Christ’s message to the church in Thyatira. Although they increased in many good things, Jesus issued a stern rebuke against them. In today’s message, we’ll learn how settling for less can cause much heartache and how Jesus calls us to embody his greatness through Gospel living.

What does it look like to remain steadfast when the world makes compromise feel reasonable? In the first century, the city of Pergamum was a difficult place to be a Christian. Surrounded by emperor worship, pagan temples, and relentless cultural pressure, the church had to decide: hold the line or give a little. Some held firm. Others compromised. Jesus noticed both. In today’s message, we’ll hear Christ’s word to a church living on the brink of evil—a sharp sword for those drifting from the truth, and a tender promise for all who will repent and hold fast to his gospel.
