Greenwood church of Christ Preaching the 1st century gospel in the 21st century

Sunday Morning Worship - 11 am to 12pm
Sun The issues people struggle with haven't changed.

We still are plagued by guilt, anger, loneliness,
hatred and so on. The Bible calls this sin. And the
only answer to the problems of our hearts is
Jesus. That's why we preach Jesus. Becoming a Christian community

Christianity requires community. It's all about
relationships. In the church we learn how, we
practice the Christian virtues of love and humility, of
joy and service. In the church we become the
people of God.

"What does the LORD require of you"? It is a provocative question don't you agree? Preachers can preach whole series of sermons expounding on the answer to that question. Bible students can grow weary trying to keep track of all the things the LORD requires of us. Thank the Lord for passages like Micah 6:8. The prophet reduces the many to three requirements. But how those three are packed full. Here is a quick look at what the LORD requires of us. First, act justly. Or as we would say "do the right thing". This requirement covers our actions with each and with the LORD. Just do the right thing. So many troubles are avoided when you simply do what is right. Second, love mercy. The true measure of anyone's character is how they treat those who have less than they do. Less status, less power, less success, just less. The one who loves mercy is careful to treat those with less with respect, kindness, and where appropriate help. Mercy is cousin to grace. Those who have known grace, who have experienced mercy should be the first to give grace and mercy to others. Third, walk humbly with your God. What this requires of us is to recall that we are not God. Our thoughts, our plans are not the same and not equal to his. We recognize he is the Creator and we are the created. So instead of resisting his will, instead of putting my ideas on how to live ahead of his, I am to be submissive to him. He must become ever greater in my eyes, while I become ever more his servant. Three things are what the LORD requires of us.

Here's a Bible word: confession. A confession is a declaration. As in "I confess my love for you". A confession is also an admission. As in "I did it, I'm the one". The Christian declaration is "Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God". Christians make that declaration verbally when they tell others about their faith in Jesus as their Savior. Christians also declare their conviction by the way they live. In adopting the manner of living taught by Jesus Christians declare to all what they truly believe about Jesus. Christians also confess by admitting they are sinners. Which means Christians admit they are often selfish, foolish, prideful. It is an admission that we fall short of matching the life Jesus calls us to lead. We make that confession to God our Father in prayer believing his promise of forgiveness when we confess our sin. We also admit our sin to one another. This admission serves to keep us honest and humble. Plus we receive forgiveness from the ones we have wronged. There is a saying, "Confession is good for the soul". The Bible heartly endorses that saying.
