"Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper." Jer 29:7
I would suggest America is not our true home if we are citizens of heaven (Phil 3:20). Yet even as exiles we are given a responsibility to steward and cultivate good in the land in which God has placed us. We are commanded to pray. The idea that exiles would have a vote in their own governing was foreign to Jeremiah but we are blessed to be in a country that affords us this opportunity. Therefore, I can say with certainty we are commanded to pray for our nation always, and especially during election seasons. But, I can also say with great confidence that we are also called to vote.
One way we can “seek peace and prosperity” for our country is to vote according to God’s will. I understand there isn’t a “God’s will” vote button, in the booth, so each believer must pray and examine the scriptures to see which candidate or party most closely aligns with the beliefs and practices God promotes and cast a prayerful vote. Please don’t skip the prayer and scripture reading in lieu of simply following a podcaster or talking head or viral reel…or even a spiritual leader. This verse says “pray to the Lord for it,” not “go to Facebook and see what your friends are sharing”. Not many verses after this it says “seek me and you will find me, if you seek me with your whole heart”. We must not outsource our seeking to the loudest or most viral social media posts or our favorite news channels.
Seek the Lord and you will find him. Then do as he leads with your vote.
