A study of Saul provides quite an insight into how a man can deceive himself. In I Samuel 15, he was instructed by God through Samuel to utterly destroy the Amalekites. Utterly destroy. No people left. No possessions left. No flocks or herds should survive. This was the severe punishment God reserved for the descendants of Amalek because of the way they treated the wandering Jews in the wilderness way back in Exodus 17. Because of their refusal to treat Israel kindly as they left Egypt, God vowed His punishment on them. It was time for that promise to be fulfilled. It fell to Saul to carry out God’s intentions.

But he didn’t.

We are having technical difficulties with our recording that may take a few weeks to correct. The stream will still have audio and will show the screen at the front of the Sanctuary. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we resolve this issue!

SOME UPLIFTING HISTORY FOR YOUR DAY...
On this day in history…
On May 29, 1790, the US Constitution was officially ratified when Rhode Island became the 13th colony to do so. The United States is the greatest nation in history for the freedom of Christians. No state sponsored religion was established, not because of any antagonism to religion, but because the founders knew in the future, government would corrupt that religion. Although the constitution does not explicitly invoke the Bible or Christianity because of its purpose as a legal document, the previous documents and minds that formed this nation did.

The most influential political writing for the constitution was Common Sense by Thomas Payne. This ideology is overlooked in its significance for our nation, but we would not exist with our current freedoms without it. The primary theme of Common Sense is the natural rights of humans that we are granted by God, and government is only tasked to protect those rights.

Don’t let the voices of the world fool you: The freedom we are granted by the US Constitution in this country to live and practice our faith was always recognized by the founders as divine!

WHAT WE BELIEVE - Our view on Jesus

Scripture references:

John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

John 14:6
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Matthew 1:23
“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).

Hebrews 4:14-15
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

Hebrews 2:14-15
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.

I Corinthians 15:3-8
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.

Some uplifting history for your day...
On May 27, 1944, a 25-year-old newlywed made his debut as a speaker at a Youth For Christ rally in Chicago to 3,000 people. Billy Graham was already using the new radio media to preach to the masses, but this event led to him being hired as the first full-time evangelist for YFC, eventually becoming the vice-president.

Graham would go on to become the most influential world-wide evangelist in history within his own lifetime! It is estimated he preached the Gospel message in person to over 215 million people, without considering the millions reached through other forms of media.

If you are ever out near Charlotte, North Carolina, be sure to go visit the Billy Graham Library for an incredible experience as you journey through his life and understand how God used him to minister to the world! Parking and admission are free, and as you go through the facility, it is apparent that all the volunteers there still work with the priority of ministering to all those who visit, continuing Graham's legacy of sharing the Gospel!

WHAT DO THE OLD HYMNS MEAN?
What are “Ether Plains”? Or what is an “Ebenezer”?

While many of us sing the old hymns and recognize they are beautiful, how often do we not understand the very words we are singing? It is good for us to reflect and meditate on the words we use in our worship.

Here, Terry addresses some of the lyrics we may not understand so that we may become more direct in our intention for worship, instead of often reciting sounds we can only believe are glorifying God.

THE PAST IS IMPORTANT

Tomorrow is Memorial Day for our nation. It is certainly appropriately named. It is to be a day in which the nation remembers the past and those that shaped it. Lives dedicated and lives lost. A price paid for something valuable. “Never Forget” are the two words most associated with Memorial Day. When we forget the sacrifice, we lose sight of the value of what was bought with that sacrifice.

We have the ultimate “the past is important” experience every time we share the Lord’s Supper. This communion, far from common, is a reminder of the worst and the best of human history. The worst is the catalog of sins throughout humankind’s story. Sin separated us from God and there is absolutely nothing we can do to bridge the gap unless God provides access. That, then, is the best part of communion. Divine flesh and blood represented in bread and juice, reminding us of the most extraordinary moment in human history: the death of a Savior followed by the proof of life through His resurrection.
