Genuine pretending is the spiritual practice that helps us navigate society's roles without over-identifying with them. The genuine pretender fulfills the role without over-internalizing it. Join Alan Shear Sunday, November 1 as he leads an exploration into the spiritual practice of genuine pretending.

The Rev. Dr. Alan Shear is a member of Tree of Life UUC serving on the Worship Arts committee.

Beloveds, the faithful work of protecting our planet, our democracy, and our loved ones can be exhausting. We must make space for rest, for joy, and for meaningful practices of renewal in these hectic days. And it is also true that when we take action with our communities, we have the many inspiring stories of vigilant resistance, the protest songs, and the profound examples of courageous witness to fortify our spirits.

May this solidarity inspire us as we remember that it requires years to topple empires, and that we are the ones who keep each other on the path of a faithful NO. No, not my neighbors. No, not the corruption of my values. No, not the children. No, not the erasure of democracy. JUST NO. Not in my name.

Our acts of faithful dissent are a foundational way that we show up for communal care and, when carried out in community together, these acts can be healing and inspiring, strengthening and renewing.

I encourage Unitarian Universalists from across our Association to join this public lecture, led by Dr. Elías Ortega, President of Meadville Lombard Theological School and Professor of Religion, Ethics, and Leadership, on Monday at 7:30pm ET/6:30pm CT/4:30pm PT.

The lecture will explore the question of what our collective responsibility is to tend to our democratic project. Dr. Ortega will draw on theological perspectives on civic life and feminist ethics of care to argue that democracy is a form of care for one another and for our society, now and in the future.

Caregivers need support, too! That's why BLUU is delighted to announce the inaugural Spiritual Caregiver Fellowship for Black spiritual caregivers who demonstrate an investment in Black healing and Black spiritual well-being.

From January 2027 through June 2027, the BLUU Spiritual Caregivers Cohort will gather once a month to learn about each other's work, deepen their commitment to justice-centered care, and learn about diverse approaches to spiritual caregiving.

All fellows will receive a $750 stipend at the completion of the fellowship.

February Sky

"Hearken Now, the Darkness Comes, a celebration of the last-harvest holiday of Samhain (Celtic New Year or Halloween) "

The Celtic word "Samhain" means “summer’s end.” This holiday is the beginning of Winter and the New Year, the time of giving thanks for a good harvest, and a time for letting go of what no longer serves us. It is also the time of year when the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead is said to be the thinnest, and the dead are invited back for loving remembrance. In the course of this service, we will observe all of these ancient traditions and reflect on their significance in our modern lives. Please bring a picture or other memento of a departed loved one to church to place on our Samhain altar.

February Sky is a folk duo consisting of Phil Cooper (he/him) and Susan Urban (she/her). They specialize in providing music-based services to various UU churches and fellowships while traveling with their music. Susan began presenting these services at 2nd Unitarian Church in Chicago during the 1980s and expanded to other UU churches in 1998. Initially, Phil joined Susan as a backup musician for these services. However, in 2007, they officially formed a duo and began working together to create and present services. In 2013, Phil and Susan relocated to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where they became full-time musicians and UU service presenters. Today, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the histories, cultures, wisdom, and enduring presence of Indigenous peoples and communities.

This day is both a celebration and a call to reflection and action. We acknowledge the ongoing impacts of colonization, displacement, and injustice, while recognizing the resilience, leadership, and contributions of Indigenous peoples who continue to shape our world.

As Unitarian Universalists, our commitment to justice, equity, and interdependence calls us to move beyond acknowledgment toward meaningful solidarity—listening to Indigenous voices, respecting Tribal sovereignty, honoring treaty rights, and supporting Indigenous-led efforts to protect their lands, cultures, and communities.

May we remember that Indigenous history is not only history. Indigenous peoples are here, their cultures are living and evolving, and their futures deserve our solidarity and support.

Healing and Community: Ancient Lessons for Contemporary Times

In recent weeks, when our news cycles have been filled with reports and accounts of horrific and dehumanizing events, it can be difficult and challenging to find hope and meaning. Many sacred texts have been written in similar times and under similar circumstances. This Sunday, we consider two stories about healing found in the book commonly known as The Gospel According to Mark, written by an occupied people within a violent empire. Chaplain Dave will guide us in a literary and historical exploration of these healing stories, and consider the lessons they hold for us today, 956 years after they have been written.

Dave Becker is a Unitarian Universalist Minister and Interfaith Chaplain. He is Pastor for Prairie Circle Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Grayslake, IL and for Tree of Life Unitarian Universalist Congregation in McHenry, IL.

She's the current Director of Spiritual Life at a Denver-area retirement community and has served as a hospice chaplain, church minister, and public theologian in the Denver/Boulder area. She offers counseling and coaching sessions, shamanic healings, sacred scripture teachings, and online courses in subjects such as shamanic forgiveness, modern Christian iconography, and energetic hygiene.
