Pentecost Sunday
GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME
Prelude-
Call to Worship:
Leader: Come to the Lord
All: All who are thirsty
Leader: Come to the Lord
All: All who are dry and searching for relief.
Leader: Open your heart to receive the Holy Spirit
All: So that the Holy Spirit can flow through you.
Come to us, Holy Spirit!
Prayer of Praise and Adoration: Throughout time, O God, you have sent your Spirit to men and women so that your Word can be seen and heard in every age and in every time. We open our hearts and our minds to you, Holy Spirit. Make our words bold and our actions true, so that we can bear your light into the world. We pray to you, Creator God, Prince of Peace, Breath of Heaven. Amen.

*Hymn: “On Pentecost They Gathered” PH 128
*Call to Confession
*Prayer of Confession
Gracious God, we settle for the lukewarm instead of drawing close to your flame. We are willing to accept “good enough” instead of pushing ourselves to do more. You sent the Holy Spirit to empower us, but we close our hearts to your call. Forgive us, Lord, for our weakness, for our lack of conviction, and for our failure to make your work our priority. We pray to receive your grace, Lord Jesus. Amen.
(Time for silent prayer) Let all God’s people say: Amen

Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another….Peace with you! And also with you.

COMMUNION
Leader: The Lord be with you.
All: And with your Spirit.
Leader: Lift up your hearts.
All: We lift them to the Lord.
Leader: IIt is right and a good and joyful thing always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth. …..
For these mighty acts of your Holy Spirit, we praise your name and join in the eternal hymn of all the angels and saints who sing
All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosannah in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest!
Leader: Let us say what we believe, using the words of the Apostles Creed.
All: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth, and in Jesus Christ his only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate was crucified dead and buried. He descended in Hell, on the third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into Heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.
Leader: Holy are you, indeed, and blessed is Jesus Christ your Son……
Therefore, in remembrance of the mighty acts and the blessed promises of Jesus, we offer ourselves to you in union with his suffering for us, proclaiming the mystery of faith:
All: Christ has died, Christ has risen. Christ will come again.
Leader: Send your Holy Spirit upon us, gathered here out of love for you, and on this bread and wine. Let the bread we break be true fellowship in the body of Christ. Let the cup we share be a true participation in the new covenant in his blood. By your Spirit manifest in us the power of your redeeming love that the world may see Christ in us as we serve in his name.

Join us at 10 a.m. for conversation, Scripture and coffee, and at 11 a.m. our worship service will involve Communion. Tomorrow is known as Pentecost and we will be wearing RED tomorrow to remember God’s gift of the Holy Spirit. The sermon title is “Go With the Flow”, and we’ve heard a rumor that the pastor has been looking up song lyrics again. What song do you think it might be?

Yesterday Pastor Susan attended the quarterly meeting of the Presbytery of West Virginia, which was held at the Campus Christian Center in Huntington. Our educational time was led by Chris Bailey, Presbyterian chaplain at Marshall, Tanner Capps, Chaplain at Davis & Elkins College, and Will Myers, Presbyterian Chaplain at WVU. It was great to hear about the interesting ways that they reach out to students at our colleges and universities.

Later, Pastor Susan presented the Minute for Mission during the presbytery’s worship service. The offering taken during the service will be sent to The Water Project, a non-profit fund set up to assist southern West Virginians who are impacted by the water crisis in several counties.

We are grateful to the presbytery for hearing the cries of the people, and for providing a way for us to respond to this need as a group. In John 7, Christ bids us to come to Him to receive the living water. But Jesus goes on to say that believers don’t just receive the water. “Out of the believer’s heart[j] shall flow rivers of living water.” May our gifts and our prayers become a part of that holy flow.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD

*Hymn: “In Christ There is No East or West” 439

* Affirmation of Faith-
This Affirmation of Faith is adapted from the Heidelberg Catechism, written in 1563.
Christ, while his disciples watched, was taken up from the earth into heaven and remains there on our behalf until he comes again to judge the living and the dead. Christ is true human and true God. In his human form Christ is not now on earth but in his divinity, majesty, grace and Spirit, he is never absent from us. In Christ’s ascension we receive an advocate in heaven, in the presence of the Father. We have our own flesh in heaven as a sure pledge that Christ will also take us up to himself. We give praise and honor to God the Father, God the Christ, God the Spirit. Amen.

We give thanks for the many souls who have been nurtured in their faith journeys by the members and friends in this congregation. May those who remain find new and loving church families within nearby congregations.

Before coming to us, Gilbert’s Pastor Susan preached at this church on several occasions while she was an Authorized Lay Pastor, and it remains close to her heart.
