If your brother or sister sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If you are listened to, you have regained that one. But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses.

Matthew 18:15-16

We find ourselves back in the gospel of Matthew this week. This is where we find the text on which church disciplinary action is based. In a community of faith, the hope is that when someone in the church hurts another member, that simply raising this issue with the offender will bring resolution. Once the offender realizes that they have hurt another, they will make amends and commit to not reoffending.

This teaching also recognizes that it’s not always that simple when dealing with sinful humans. So, if that doesn’t work, there are escalations to try to find resolution. We have already heard from Paul in Romans about how we are to behave with one another. This process is for the times when we are not being so loving to one another.

How is this good news? It recognizes that we are imperfect humans and that sometimes we need to have some help in being loving to each other. We are all in this together, sometimes through challenging times.

How might we live out being a loving community? Especially in a world that encourages us to turn against each other?

Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

Romans 12:17-18

We are still in Paul’s letter to the Romans this week. Paul has turned his attention to the challenges of being a community of faith.

Paul points out that we have no control over anyone but ourselves. He says that love should be how we approach everything.

Paul again points out that we should never return evil for evil and we must try to live in peace with each other.

We have division today. How do Paul’s words sound to us? How might it benefit the church if we consistently acted in love towards one another and to the world around us?
