Remembrance. Gratitude. Freedom.

What we now know as Memorial Day first began as “Decoration Day” in the aftermath of the Civil War, rooted in honoring those who gave their lives in the fight for freedom, justice, and equality.
On May 1, 1865, in Charleston,SC, formerly enslaved people gathered to honor 257 Union soldiers who had been buried in a mass grave at a Confederate prison camp. Over the course of two weeks, they exhumed the bodies and gave them proper burials as an act of gratitude for those who fought for their freedom.
Their tribute became one of the earliest known Memorial Day commemorations, a powerful reminder that remembrance has always been connected to sacrifice, liberation, and hope.

Today, we remember all who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others.
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” — John 15:13

To all those who have fallen in the fight for freedom, justice, and equality, we thank you.
