IT’S A MATTER OF LIFE OR DEATH!

The dramas of life written by prolific writers and portrayed by great actors in media and movies have the same theme—Choices. The storyline begins with the good life of the main character who is surrounded by actors supporting the main character. The number of actors depends on the budget for the film more than the story at times. But one thing is for sure; all stories rise and fall upon the choices made between what will bring life or cause certain death.

Many lighter to dark scenarios with decisions to make along the way to follow good or evil will build the storyline to its greatest problem to solve. Wisdom, integrity, and knowledge are what is needed to make the decision that is best for all. Some follow wisdom, but not until the drama builds in tension with elements of surprise! The supporting characters will either rise or fall with the main character depending upon how their role will help to solve or add to the problem. Either way, the choice has to be made or the story cannot go forward. The choice will come at a cost, for the life of the main character is at stake! Will evil or good win? It depends of the creator of the story.

Since the days of Adam and Eve’s fall to evil, mankind has been plagued with fighting the battle between good and evil. Many stories have played out over history and is written to show us the power, authority, and character of God. But the decisions to follow Him are ours to make. To God, we are either for God or against Him. There is no middle ground to stand on.

Choices must be made by each individual to choose life or death. If we choose life with God, our belief and behaviors will hardly ever be popular with the people around us who make different choices. Our decision to follow God no matter what and lean into His wisdom, seeking His insight and understanding, might even temporarily affect what others see as prosperity on earth. But we who believe and follow know better. With God, through Jesus, we have everything we need and more. We know how God’s story ends with complete victory over evil; for He has revealed it to John so that the world may know.

When we make decisions without the wisdom of God who has a better plan for each one of us; we fall more easily to evil. We become easy prey for the lion of evil who prowls around waiting to take us down and hold us as slaves to our sins. But God…But with God, who is the Source of Life, has a better plan to bring us out of trouble and change our storyline forever! The Plan was, is, and always will be His Son, Jesus—our Savior and Lord.

Centuries ago, when most of God’s people stopped listening, God stopped talking to them. When God’s people believed they could do life without Him; He allowed them to try. A stronger, evil, barbaric nation overcame them and took them to Babylon as captives where they were slaves for seventy years. When the people finally began to call out to God while remembering the words of His prophets who warned them—this is what our God, full of compassion and always faithful, said through Jeremiah, His prophet who didn’t give up on God;

“This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place. For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity.” Jeremiah 29:10-14

God is Wisdom. True Wisdom begins and ends with God, the Source of Life.

Proverbs 4, The Message
Your Life Is at Stake
4 1-2 Listen, friends, to some fatherly advice;
sit up and take notice so you’ll know how to live.
I’m giving you good counsel;
don’t let it go in one ear and out the other.
3-9 When I was a boy at my father’s knee,
the pride and joy of my mother,
He would sit me down and drill me:
“Take this to heart. Do what I tell you—live!
Sell everything and buy Wisdom! Forage for Understanding!
Don’t forget one word! Don’t deviate an inch!
Never walk away from Wisdom—she guards your life;
love her—she keeps her eye on you.
Above all and before all, do this: Get Wisdom!
Write this at the top of your list: Get Understanding!
Throw your arms around her—believe me, you won’t regret it;
never let her go—she’ll make your life glorious.
She’ll garland your life with grace,
she’ll festoon your days with beauty.”
10-15 Dear friend, take my advice;
it will add years to your life.
I’m writing out clear directions to Wisdom Way,
I’m drawing a map to Righteous Road.
I don’t want you ending up in blind alleys,
or wasting time making wrong turns.
Hold tight to good advice; don’t relax your grip.
Guard it well—your life is at stake!
Don’t take Wicked Bypass;
don’t so much as set foot on that road.
Stay clear of it; give it a wide berth.
Make a detour and be on your way.
16-17 Evil people are restless
unless they’re making trouble;
They can’t get a good night’s sleep
unless they’ve made life miserable for somebody.
Perversity is their food and drink,
violence their drug of choice.
18-19 The ways of right-living people glow with light;
the longer they live, the brighter they shine.
But the road of wrongdoing gets darker and darker—
travelers can’t see a thing; they fall flat on their faces.
Learn It by Heart
20-22 Dear friend, listen well to my words;
tune your ears to my voice.
Keep my message in plain view at all times.
Concentrate! Learn it by heart!
Those who discover these words live, really live;
body and soul, they’re bursting with health.
23-27 Keep vigilant watch over your heart;
that’s where life starts.
Don’t talk out of both sides of your mouth;
avoid careless banter, white lies, and gossip.
Keep your eyes straight ahead;
ignore all sideshow distractions.
Watch your step,
and the road will stretch out smooth before you.
Look neither right nor left;
leave evil in the dust.

Choose Life. Guard your heart. Prayerfully consider each decision made today. Seek God and His wisdom as if your life depended on it---because it does!

Lord,
Thank you for your wisdom written in forms we can begin to understand. The depths of your insight from your perspective are needed in our world of confusion issues of the day where both sides of the debate seem foolish and without merit or truth. Guide us, Lord. Teach us Truth. Your love and light shine brightly for the world to see you in us. Oh Lord, I cry out for your wisdom again today. Thank you for listening with your perfect, pleasing and perfect will for me as you do for others who decide to follow you.
In Jesus Name, Amen

KNOW IT ALLS KNOW NOTHING

It is actually pretty easy to throw a loud and obnoxious know it all off track and cause them to be still for a minute in debating life when you ask how they came to all. But let us turn inward as “All have sinned” in this area while growing and maturing in our faith and life. All have sinned on those certain days when we think we can do life without God and tell proceed to tell others how we do life like us! All have sinned in foolishly thinking that we know better than God about living our lives to the full. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God to live life well when we lean on our own understanding of life and how life works instead of leaning, trusting, asking, listening for God—the Creator of Life and the Savior of our Souls. Trust God, only He knows what lies ahead and is already at work on our behalf to use life to teach us to be more like Him who created us “in His own image”.

Proverbs 3, The Message
Don’t Assume You Know It All
1-2 Good friend, don’t forget all I’ve taught you;
take to heart my commands.
They’ll help you live a long, long time,
a long life lived full and well.
3-4 Don’t lose your grip on Love and Loyalty.
Tie them around your neck; carve their initials on your heart.
Earn a reputation for living well
in God’s eyes and the eyes of the people.
5-12 Trust God from the bottom of your heart;
don’t try to figure out everything on your own.
Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go;
he’s the one who will keep you on track.
Don’t assume that you know it all.
Run to God! Run from evil!
Your body will glow with health,
your very bones will vibrate with life!
Honor God with everything you own;
give him the first and the best.
Your barns will burst,
your w**e vats will brim over.
But don’t, dear friend, resent God’s discipline;
don’t sulk under his loving correction.
It’s the child he loves that God corrects;
a father’s delight is behind all this.
The Very Tree of Life
13-18 You’re blessed when you meet Lady Wisdom,
when you make friends with Madame Insight.
She’s worth far more than money in the bank;
her friendship is better than a big salary.
Her value exceeds all the trappings of wealth;
nothing you could wish for holds a candle to her.
With one hand she gives long life,
with the other she confers recognition.
Her manner is beautiful,
her life wonderfully complete.
She’s the very Tree of Life to those who embrace her.
Hold her tight—and be blessed!
19-20 With Lady Wisdom, God formed Earth;
with Madame Insight, he raised Heaven.
They knew when to signal rivers and springs to the surface,
and dew to descend from the night skies.
Never Walk Away
21-26 Dear friend, guard Clear Thinking and Common Sense with your life;
don’t for a minute lose sight of them.
They’ll keep your soul alive and well,
they’ll keep you fit and attractive.
You’ll travel safely,
you’ll neither tire nor trip.
You’ll take afternoon naps without a worry,
you’ll enjoy a good night’s sleep.
No need to panic over alarms or surprises,
or predictions that doomsday’s just around the corner,
Because God will be right there with you;
he’ll keep you safe and sound.
27-29 Never walk away from someone who deserves help;
your hand is God’s hand for that person.
Don’t tell your neighbor “Maybe some other time”
or “Try me tomorrow”
when the money’s right there in your pocket.
Don’t figure ways of taking advantage of your neighbor
when he’s sitting there trusting and unsuspecting.
30-32 Don’t walk around with a chip on your shoulder,
always spoiling for a fight.
Don’t try to be like those who shoulder their way through life.
Why be a bully?
“Why not?” you say. Because God can’t stand twisted souls.
It’s the straightforward who get his respect.
33-35 God’s curse blights the house of the wicked,
but he blesses the home of the righteous.
He gives proud skeptics a cold shoulder,
but if you’re down on your luck, he’s right there to help.
Wise living gets rewarded with honor;
stupid living gets the b***y prize.

WHAT DO WE LEARN—HOW DO WE RESPOND?

We learned yesterday that true wisdom begins and ends with God. God is wisdom. Today God’s wisdom tell us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (v5-6, NIV)

How do we get on God’s straight path and walk humbly with God? Try this;

Seek God first before our own agenda items bombard our minds. “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”—Jesus, telling the crowds who gathered to hear Him speak the words of God, Matthew 6:33. He was referring to the physical needs with reminding us that God will provide.
Give God back what He has given to us—Today! As we rise to see the sun, ask God for wisdom, insight and understanding as we go about this day. “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”—James 1:5 I would rather begin and end this day with God’s wisdom rather than my own—how about you?
Submit to God’s wisdom by asking what He wants to do in us for today. Following God’s agenda will be easier than our own! “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”—Jesus, Matthew 11:28-30 (Substitute the work yoke for agenda and see what happens as we pray for understanding God’s leading today!)
Offer all we are to God as a living sacrifice to Him. It is then we will know His good, pleasing and perfect will for us today! “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:1-2, NIV
Rejoice! “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.”—Philippians 4:4—in all circumstances writes Paul the Apostle. Rejoicing people who know they are redeemed draw others who are curious about why we are smiling!
Love God; Love Others—the two greatest commandments, Jesus tells us. Proverbs 3 is teaching us that a right relationship with God motivates right dealings with neighbors. Its two commands, "trust God’s wisdom" and "Don’t lose your grip on Love and Loyalty" are close to Jesus 'command to love God and one's neighbor (Mt 22:34–40). 1 John 4 explains that if we don’t know God, we don’t know love for love is God, and God is love. Know it all’s only love themselves. “Don’t assume that you know it all. Run to God! Run from evil!” (v.7) Live God’s love.

Lord,
I need you every hour of this day. I’m yours. I’m listening. I confess I do not know it all but what I do know I will tell. God was, is and always will be God who sent His Son, Jesus to save us from our sins. God’s Holy Spirit lives in the redeemed to show and tell us the Truth. Just knowing this Truth leads me to you, running to you, for wisdom. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

IF YOU…

Many years ago, I took a seminary class that required us to read a Proverb a day for the development of our character while renewing our minds. It was much like the old adage, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” for our physical health; but this discipline became vital to our spiritual health! I especially loved reading the Proverb a day from the Message paraphrase by Eugene Peterson as it was our language for our time and God’s wisdom made perfect sense!

The wisdom words and truth bombs of this book get our attention then cause us to remember what Jesus was taught us about Kingdom of God thinking on the Sermon on the Mount! God thinks and acts higher and greater than we do as His created humans jaded by living in a broken, sinful world. The way God thinks and responds is always counter to what the world thinks of as good and right. “That will do” is not God’s thinking for He teaches us to go beyond what is necessary to help others know Him while declaring His glory! What He says to do as we walk with Him, will always be greater than what is required in the world’s way of thinking and responding. (See Matthew 5-7 as references to living an upside down kingdom way of life.)

However, before Jesus came to demonstrate how God thinks and responds to life, there is Proverbs. This book causes all readers to stop and think about the depth of our own character’s integrity when it comes to living a life with the wisdom of God as our desired discipline of “walking humbly with God”. (Micah 6:8) The words written in Proverbs come through Solomon, son of David, who asked for God’s wisdom to begin to lead the Kingdom of Israel. Oh, if all our leaders would read a proverb a day and take the truth to heart! I wonder if…

In this next chapter, we continue with words that are very personal, like father to son personal. There are many “if you…” statements of truth, with consequences for not following truth. Let us pray, asking for God’s Holy Spirit to lead us as we read, listen, and meditate of how these words will enrich the grow of our own spiritual lives.

Proverbs 2
Moral Benefits of Wisdom
2 My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
2 turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding—
3 indeed, if you call out for insight
and cry aloud for understanding,
4 and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.
6 For the Lord gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7 He holds success in store for the upright,
he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,
8 for he guards the course of the just
and protects the way of his faithful ones.
9 Then you will understand what is right and just
and fair—every good path.
10 For wisdom will enter your heart,
and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
11 Discretion will protect you,
and understanding will guard you.
12 Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men,
from men whose words are perverse,
13 who have left the straight paths
to walk in dark ways,
14 who delight in doing wrong
and rejoice in the perverseness of evil,
15 whose paths are crooked
and who are devious in their ways.
16 Wisdom will save you also from the adulterous woman,
from the wayward woman with her seductive words,
17 who has left the partner of her youth
and ignored the covenant she made before God.
18 Surely her house leads down to death
and her paths to the spirits of the dead.
19 None who go to her return
or attain the paths of life.
20 Thus you will walk in the ways of the good
and keep to the paths of the righteous.
21 For the upright will live in the land,
and the blameless will remain in it;
22 but the wicked will be cut off from the land,
and the unfaithful will be torn from it.

WHAT DO WE LEARN—HOW DO WE RESPOND?

God is wisdom. God has the power, with desire, to give us His wisdom with power to obey His wisdom—just ask Him! And when we ask, God will not decide like earthly humans to evaluate if we deserve it or have earned it. God gives wisdom to all sincere hearts and minds who ask for wisdom! A hidden gem in the “count it all joy” opening of James, leapt off the page for me years ago;
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” James 1:5

We can be at our lowest in life but if we ask for God’s wisdom—He gives without finding fault with lectures on how we should have been before we fell without His wisdom to guide us! Coming to God means forgiveness. I don’t know about you, but in our world of guilt-ridden people who abused others with pouring on the guilt; this is THE GOOD NEWS of salvation and redemption with restoration all wrapped up again in this statement of God’s relentless love with His compassionate mercy and unending grace.
“IF ANY OF YOU” lacks wisdom, we can ask God—with no prerequisites required. We merely seek our Father God who desires to help His Created get back on the path to walking humbly with Him! God is the wisdom we seek. God is wisdom. The last help of Proverbs 2 declares all the reasons why to seek God’s wisdom for living—God’s wisdom will save us! Wisdom are skills for living and walking humbly with God on His path of good and right.

Need wisdom? Ask God. We can trust the God who made us and sent His Son to save us!

Lord,
Bless us with your wisdom today and forever! Cleanse our hearts, minds, and souls of all that is not of you and fill us with your wisdom that defines our character as a follower of you. Renew our minds to think more like you and less like the world around us that always drags us down. Refresh and reset our souls with your wisdom as our default setting. Restore unto us the joy of your salvation always at work within us to guide us on the path to walking humbly with you daily.
In Jesus Name, Amen

SEEK WISDOM

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” James 1:2-6 (Emphasis mine)

God is Wisdom. God gave wisdom to Solomon who asked for it when he became King of Israel, after his father King David. Before taking the throne, knowing the monumental task before him; Solomon bows before God and asks for wisdom from God. Oh that all our leaders from local to nation would do this daily before doing anything of significance for the people they serve as well as the relationships they build with other nations. Whether they pray for God’s discernment or not is not ours to judge; but it is God’s command and our responsibility to pray for them—without finding fault or demonizing them—just pray God’s wisdom over them with the love of God in our hearts as we pray.

Solomon seeks Wisdom from God. Read the whole story, in context, in 1 Kings 3 which introduces Solomon's reign with a focus on God’s wisdom. Here’s part of the story of God in Solomon;
At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.”
Solomon answered, “You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day.
“Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?”
The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both wealth and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. And if you walk in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.” Then Solomon awoke—and he realized it had been a dream.” 1 Kings 3:5-15

What God promised Solomon in a dream reveals the promises of God to do what He says—when we ask for wisdom. Even today, most people speak of Solomon as synonymous with wisdom, for Solomon’s ask of asking for wisdom is the greatest example of how God responds to those who seek His wisdom, insight, and understanding above all else in this world. “Need wisdom, ask God, who gives without finding fault.”

Who does not need more wisdom? I cannot name one person in my world or on planet earth, including me, who could not use God’s wisdom in response to life. The longer I live on earth, the more I know about God, I learn the more I need to know God . I’m also more humbled daily as I come before God who is wisdom to ask for His wisdom, insight, perspective, with understanding for all of life’s stuff on earth.

As we begin the Book of Proverbs, aka The Wisdom Book of Solomon, let us ask seek wisdom from God. Let us bow before Him daily and ask for His discernment in whatever perplexing item demands our attention and response. God’s Holy Spirit leads us to all that is true—how grateful we are for the Holy Spirit (God) living in us to guide us.
May we then respond with God’s wisdom guiding all we think, say, and do. For we learn THIS response will please God and give Him glory while He gives us His wisdom—generously! There is no one like our God!

Proverbs 1
Purpose and Theme
1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
2 for gaining wisdom and instruction;
for understanding words of insight;
3 for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,
doing what is right and just and fair;
4 for giving prudence to those who are simple,
knowledge and discretion to the young—
5 let the wise listen and add to their learning,
and let the discerning get guidance—
6 for understanding proverbs and parables,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Prologue: Exhortations to Embrace Wisdom
Warning Against the Invitation of Sinful Men
8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
9 They are a garland to grace your head
and a chain to adorn your neck.
10 My son, if sinful men entice you,
do not give in to them.
11 If they say, “Come along with us;
let’s lie in wait for innocent blood,
let’s ambush some harmless soul;
12 let’s swallow them alive, like the grave,
and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
13 we will get all sorts of valuable things
and fill our houses with plunder;
14 cast lots with us;
we will all share the loot”—
15 my son, do not go along with them,
do not set foot on their paths;
16 for their feet rush into evil,
they are swift to shed blood.
17 How useless to spread a net
where every bird can see it!
18 These men lie in wait for their own blood;
they ambush only themselves!
19 Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain;
it takes away the life of those who get it.
Wisdom’s Rebuke
20 Out in the open wisdom calls aloud,
she raises her voice in the public square;
21 on top of the wall she cries out,
at the city gate she makes her speech:
22 “How long will you who are simple love your simple ways?
How long will mockers delight in mockery
and fools hate knowledge?
23 Repent at my rebuke!
Then I will pour out my thoughts to you,
I will make known to you my teachings.
24 But since you refuse to listen when I call
and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand,
25 since you disregard all my advice
and do not accept my rebuke,
26 I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you;
I will mock when calamity overtakes you—
27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm,
when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind,
when distress and trouble overwhelm you.
28 “Then they will call to me but I will not answer;
they will look for me but will not find me,
29 since they hated knowledge
and did not choose to fear the Lord.
30 Since they would not accept my advice
and spurned my rebuke,
31 they will eat the fruit of their ways
and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.
32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them,
and the complacency of fools will destroy them;
33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety
and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

WHAT DO WE LEARN—HOW DO WE RESPOND?

God is wisdom. God gave Solomon wisdom when he asked for it. God never fails to love and care for us. He is always faithful in His love for us; even when we are not as faithful to Him—all because of His love, mercy, and grace.

Fear to us is a bad thing but the fear of the Lord is a good, healthy wholesome way to live. Fear of the Lord in God’s Word means we live with in loving reverence for God, our Father. This respect and reverence for God includes submission to His lordship and to the commands of God’s Word. So, when we approach God with an attitude of humility and awe; we are not afraid nor do we dread what He will say. Instead we are filled with expectant hope! It is in our awe, humility, and reference for God that we discover life's true significance—an intimate, growing, loving relationship with God!
This Way of life, humbly walking with God, asking for His wisdom (skills for living life), with expectant hope that He will answer is what sets as apart from the rest of the world who believes only in themselves and fall easily for the evil that tempts us daily. Then, in Solomon’s day the fundamental difference between Biblical and ancient Near Eastern wisdom was the ultimate motivation for behaving in a wise manner: namely, fear of Yahweh, the true God.

Do you believe in the One and Only True God?
To fear God is the beginning of wisdom.

Oh Lord,
How wonderful that you knew we would need your story written down for us so we could read, study, digest and internalize your Truth. I will meditate on your words of wisdom all day long and into the night.
The world says, but you say the opposite with grander, richer, greater ways to live our lives to glorify You as we grow in relationship ith you! I love you, Lord with all my heart, mind, and soul. I know enough of You to know You want us to love you back and to love others like you love us—without conditions.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!

DIRECT ALL OUR PRAISE TO GOD!

Just before the curtain falls, the entire orchestra comes to attention of the Conductor who will lead them to play even greater intricate melodies that bring all their abilities to bear in the performance. We know the best is yet to come when we begin to hear the transition being made in the music and tap our toes in response! We see and feel it as the pure melodies are played perfectly and harmoniously. The hairs on our being tingle and our eyes and ears are wide open to see what happens next for we know we coming to the end of a great song. Our minds become fully focused on the Conductor who has led each musician to play at their best, as one instrument, and now leads them all to the grand finale!

The music becomes even more powerful as all the instruments play their parts! We feel the slow rise that leads to a full crescendo of the masterpiece the musicians are conducted to play! We see the smile of pleasure on the Conductor’s face when all musicians play harmoniously with joy on their faces!

These thoughts come to mind as our last psalm is read—the song with only one goal—Let EVERYTHING that has breath praise the Lord! Psalm 150 is the Psalmist final call to praise God with all that is in us but it is purely directed to God! Read how the composer moves powerfully in stages from places to themes to orchestra to choir—all framed with Glorious Hallelujahs! We are going to read it twice; but even that is not enough to praise God for all He has done, is doing and will do in our lives!

There is not enough bandwidth in our world to proclaim all God has done. There is certainly not enough pages to fill of telling of His character along with His Story of Redemption. But this is a place to begin.

Praise God. No matter what is happening right now in our lives, praise God! Wherever you are, praise God. No matter what you’re feeling, praise God! No matter who you are with, praise God! No matter if it is a sunny or cloudy day, praise God! “Yet, will I trust Him”, writes Job, who was resolved to believe in the One and Only God. Praise God! Hallelujah!

Psalm 150, NIV
Praise the Lord.
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens.
2 Praise him for his acts of power;
praise him for his surpassing greatness.
3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise him with the harp and lyre,
4 praise him with timbrel and dancing,
praise him with the strings and pipe,
5 praise him with the clash of cymbals,
praise him with resounding cymbals.
6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord.

Psalm 150, The Message
1-6 Hallelujah!
Praise God in his holy house of worship,
praise him under the open skies;
Praise him for his acts of power,
praise him for his magnificent greatness;
Praise with a blast on the trumpet,
praise by strumming soft strings;
Praise him with castanets and dance,
praise him with banjo and flute;
Praise him with cymbals and a big bass drum,
praise him with fiddles and mandolin.
Let every living, breathing creature praise God!
Hallelujah!

WHAT DO WE LEARN—HOW DO WE RESPOND?

In everything, give God praise! Some psalms directed people to praise God. The final psalms of the book of Psalms were directed to Creator and Conductor, God! They begin and end with hallelujah, the Hebrew word for “Praise the Lord.”

Pure praise is an involuntary act from a soul who believes God and whose habit is praise for all things.

Max Lucado writes in reference to pure praise;
“The multitude, Matthew wrote, “were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing” (Mt 15:31).
Then Matthew, still the great economizer of words, gave us another phrase on which I wish he would have elaborated:
“They praised the God of Israel.”
I wonder how they did that? I feel more certain of what they didn’t do than of what they did do. I feel confident that they didn’t form a praise committee. I feel confident that they didn’t make any robes. I feel confident that they didn’t sit in rows and stare at the back of each other’s heads.
I doubt seriously if they wrote a creed on how they were to praise this God they had never before worshiped. I can’t picture them getting into an argument over technicalities. I doubt if they felt it had to be done indoors.
And I know they didn’t wait until the Sabbath to do it.
I can imagine throngs of people pushing and shoving. Wanting to get close. Not to request anything or demand anything, but just to say, “thank you.”
However they did it, they did it. And Jesus was touched, so touched that he insisted they stay for a meal before they left.
Worship is the “thank you” that refuses to be silenced.
We have tried to make a science out of worship. We can’t do that. We can’t do that any more than we can “sell love” or “negotiate peace.”
Worship is a voluntary act of gratitude offered by the saved to the Savior, by the healed to the Healer, and by the delivered to the Deliverer.” –Lucado, Encouraging Word Bible

Praise God from whom all blessings flow…praise Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Lord,
The last song in the book of psalms spoke to me with a crescendo of Your love, mercy, and grace. I hear the clanging of the cymbals and the last beat of the drums as the last Hallelujah was given in Psalm 150.
God, to you be all glory, honor, and praise. I will praise you as long as I have breath and tell of your wonderful, glorious, relentless, redeeming love. You are my Conductor and my focus is fixed on You.
In Jesus Name, Amen
