St. Luke Lutheran Church Fort Smith St. Luke is a vibrant community of faith. Luke Lutheran Church in Ft. Smith is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America synod.

Come join our happy mix of young and old, students and retirees, professionals and laborers helping one another to live our lives according to God's word. Sunday School is temporarily suspended. Sunday worship begins at 10:30 and will be followed by fellowship with coffee and snacks after the Church Council decides to restart. Everyone is welcome to join us for Sunday School, worship and fellowship as well as communion (every Sunday and Sunday School and fellowship after it restarts).

"Then Jesus says that the gates of Hades will not prevail against his Church.

"That line has often been domesticated into the image of a fortress Church bravely withstanding attack from the powers of death. But gates do not attack. Gates are not offensive. They are defensive. Gates shut. Gates hold prisoners in and keep liberators out. In this image, the defensive structure belongs to Hades, not to the Church.

"The Church is not the gated community of salvation. Hades is the gated dark domain, and those iron gates are locked tight to keep the inmates in.

"The Church is not built to cower behind walls, protecting sacred property from contamination. The Church is built on the confession of the Son who descends into death and breaks its doors from the inside. The gates of Hades do not prevail because Christ harrows hell. The Church is founded on that confession and sent into the world as the community of his release."
