WHEN LIFE TAKES AN UNEXPECTED TURN: PSALM 57
What do you do when life doesn’t go the way you expected? When the door closes, a relationship hurts you, the circumstances feel unfair, or God’s timing seems slower than yours? In 1 Samuel 24, David had the perfect opportunity to take matters into his own hands and eliminate Saul, the man hunting him down. Instead, David chose to trust God and wait on His timing. I want to encourage you to pull out your Bible (or thumb over to your Bible app) and read Psalm 57! This text gives us a glimpse into David’s heart during seasons like those mentioned above. Here are 9 reminders for when life takes an unexpected turn:
1.) Remember God’s grace and mercy. Preach the gospel to yourself daily. His mercies are new every morning!
2.) Run to Christ for refuge. Don’t seek security in the temporary things of this world. Find your shelter in Him.
3.) Trust God’s purpose. Even in the cave, God was at work. You don’t have to control every circumstance when you trust the One who is in control.
4.) Rely on God’s steadfast love and faithfulness. His faithfulness doesn’t depend on your ability to be faithful. Your faithfulness grows because He is faithful to you.
5.) Trust Him in the darkness. Even when you feel surrounded, overwhelmed, or tempted to compromise, you can trust the Lord.
6.) Give God the glory. Lift your eyes from your circumstances and remember that God is worthy of your praise.
7.) Remain steadfast in Christ. You can stand firm, not because you have earned God’s acceptance, but because you are secure in Him.
8.) Awaken your soul to wait upon the Lord. Waiting isn’t doing nothing. It’s actively and attentively trusting God, obeying His Word, praying, and refusing to take sinful shortcuts.
9.) Sing His praises and proclaim His glory. Don’t let your circumstances consume more of your attention than the God who carries you through them.
This isn’t just a story about David’s restraint... It points us to Jesus. When Satan tempted Jesus to take shortcuts, Jesus remained obedient to the Father. He went to the cross, not to take matters into His own hands, but to accomplish the will of God. Jesus did more than spare us... He took our place! And because Jesus has loved us so relentlessly, we can trust Him with our circumstances, surrender to His timing, and obey Him even when the way forward is difficult.
Where are you tempted to run ahead of God today? What would it look like to trust Him, refuse the shortcut, and wait upon the Lord?
