At ORLC, we pride ourselves on being a mainly military congregation; we meet such amazing and special individuals and families. It does become bittersweet, though, when we have to say goodbye after a few years. Today we had a special send off and prayers for families moving over the summer ๐Ÿ’™ We love you all and pray we cross paths again.

Q: Why did Christ pour out his Holy Spirit on the fiftieth day after Easter?
A: It was the OT Feast of Shavuot or Weeks, a holy day. Shavuot was fitting for Jesus to give his Holy Spirit due to its significance in the Israelite liturgical calendar.

Q: What is the OT Feast of Weeks?
A: The Feast of Weeks, or Shavuot, is the second major festival in the Israelite calendar. Starting the day after Passover, Israelites counted forty-nine days and celebrated on the fiftieth day, hence called Pentecost (Lev 23:15-16; Deut 16:9-10). Itโ€™s an agricultural festival when Israel offered two loaves of bread, a bull, two rams, seven lambs, a sin offering, and peace offerings (Lev 23:15-19).

Q: How is Pentecost linked to the giving of the Law at Sinai?
A: Over time, Pentecost became the anniversary of the giving of the Law at Sinai, as noted in Jewish writings like Jubilees and, much later, the Talmud. Exodus 19:1 indicates the Israelites arrived at Sinai in the third month after leaving Egypt, aligning with the fiftieth day after Passover.

Q: What is the connection between Pentecost and the Jubilee Year?
A: The Jubilee Year, every fiftieth year after seven sabbaths of years, involved land restoration, freedom for slaves, and rest (Lev 25:8-55). Similarly, Pentecost on the fiftieth day symbolized freedom from slavery in Egypt, the gift of the Holy Land, and rest under Godโ€™s care.

Q: How does the Christian Pentecost fulfill the OT Feast of Weeks?
A: It mirrors the fifty-day anticipation from Passover to Pentecost, symbolizing waiting for the Spirit (Luke 24:49). The first-fruits of the Spirit are offered (Rom 8:23), divine speech comes with fire (Acts 2:2-3), a new covenant is preached (Luke 22:20), and it reflects Jubilee themes of freedom, the kingdom of God, and rest in Christ (Luke 4:18-19).

A blessed Pentecost to you all!
