Dear friends,
On Monday, classes begin again at the University of Arkansas. The flurry of activity, though, has already begun as new students move in, sororities host rush events, and returning students continue to make their way back to Fayetteville. It is a busy time, a time of transition, and that can feel chaotic and unsettled.
One of the pillars of our community life at St. Martin's Episcopal Center is our primarily weekly gathering for Communion followed by a shared meal. When we offer the Eucharist at the altar consecrated for that purpose in 1963, we join with generations of the university community who have found St. Martin's Chapel to be a place of respite in the presence of Christ and encouragement for their journey. Our location just across the street from campus means that the spiritual and physical nourishment we offer is close at hand.
When Emma Pearson '28, who was baptized at the Easter Vigil this spring, offered to design the new St. Martin's T-shirt (which will be available for purchase soon), I was confident she would come up with something that expressed our values, but the final design was beyond what I could have asked for or imagined. She incorporated the design and colors from the stained glass window in the chapel as well as the phrase from our liturgy, "The peace of the Lord be always with you." It is that peace which passes human understanding that students, faculty, and staff sense when they walk into our chapel or join us around the table for lunch or dinner. It is that peace which we strive to share with the wider university community.
As another semester begins, go with God's blessing, and may his peace surround you even in the midst of whatever challenges await. Know that we are praying for you and saving you a place at the Table where Christ meets us and gives us his very presence as food and drink to refresh and sustain us. See you there!
Faithfully,
Fr. Charles
